The three day weekend claimed 434 lives as heavy snow battered the nation and treacherous roads persisted. NSC had predicted 400 to 500 deaths from 6 pm Thursday to midnight Sunday, well below 1965’s 564 and above 1949’s 269 record low postwar figures. Other three day holidays saw 612 Labor Day, 540 July 4th, and 509 Christmas deaths.
