Auto Factories Are in Low Gear

Detroit report says General Motors idled nearly half its 415,000 workers nationwide after the Mansfield Ohio parts plant wildcat strike. Some 196,000 idle across 85 plants in 17 states with 17 of 23 passenger car assembly plants affected. GM warned another week may pass before production resumes.

Cold Farewell For Jim Schwoegler At Monroe High

More than 200 farm friends gathered in the Monroe High School M Room on a cold night to bid farewell to Jim Schwoegler as he takes on a new role as area conservationist over a 10 county region based in La Crosse. Speakers honored his Soil Conservation Service work with watershed units and praised his leadership before a standing ovation and a reception line. Gifts included a slide camera and a mural created for the watershed communities.

Policeman Owned Car Not a Police Car

A late model car found in Frank Klarer's garage Thursday belonged to a city policeman, not a city police car as earlier reported. Police Chief Dwight C. Coplien confirmed it was the officer's personal vehicle.

Knowles Asks UW For A Crackdown

In Mansfield Ohio a wildcat strike by United Auto Workers Local 549 ended after 2 650 workers walked out over alleged farming out of work. The action triggered nationwide plant closures and mass layoffs at General Motors equity. The strike arose from a dispute over suspensions for workers who refused to load dies for shipment to Pontiac Michigan. GM says a return to work is underway but a full restoration of all 415000 workers may take another week.

Blood Drive Breaks Record For 193 Pints Donated

Monroe Jaycettes lead a record blood drive at the Junior High School gymnasium totaling 193 pints from 207 volunteers with 14 rejections. The drive exceeded the quota of 115 pints by 87, despite bitter cold, with local businesses and media credit for support and refreshments provided by WSCS and the French Club.

Filipino medical technicians arrive at St Clare Hospital
