Reynolds Out Of Judge Race

A Milwaukee spokesman for Senator Gaylord Nelson says the White House indicated President Johnson was not interested in appointing former Governor John W. Reynolds to the Western Wisconsin district judgeship. Reynolds, defeated for re election, is out of consideration as the vacancy nears. James Doyle remains the only other known candidate, with Rabinovitz having served as interim judge and not reappointed.

Deininger Keeps Post Directors Elected At Joint Farm Meet

Donald Deininger of Monroe was re elected president of the Green County Farm Bureau board at a joint Farm Bureau and Farmco Co operative meeting in Turner Hall. Allen B. Kline of Western Springs Ill warned of dangers from growing central government power while praising farmer organizations. Re elected were Farm Bureau officers Deininger Digman Siedschlag and Whitehead and directors Bloom Baumgartner Siedschlag Dunphy Daubert Miller. Farmco directors re elected Hartwig Roderick Preuti Lewis Benkert. A 200 dollar UW Farm Short Course scholarship was awarded to Alvin Tschudy. The meeting included reports from Russell Block and Virgil Brunkow and featured Monroe Folk Arts Club entertainment.

Smoke Fills Basement at Rev. Rice Home

Monroe firemen answered an 8:13 am alarm at the Rev. Grant Rice residence when the basement filled with smoke. They said the chimney iced up causing the smoke and ventilated by opening and airing the chimney to clear the area.

Day of Prayer Lent Program Set At Local Churches

Community members are invited to attend a Lenten Breakfast and World Day of Prayer on March 3 and 5 at St John s United Church of Christ and Grace Lutheran Church. Rev Calvin P Fischer will lead a Lenten meditation with a 7 or 9 30 a m breakfast option. A heavy snow warning covers Southern Wisconsin after a prior storm left from one to six inches across the region. Monroe reported about four inches with blowing snow and hazardous driving conditions linger.

Elmer Hanson Found Dead at Browntown Farm Home

Elmer Hanson, 69, was found dead in his bed at his rural Browntown farm this morning. Coroner Richard A. Wagner responded at 10:45 a.m. an autopsy is planned. Stuessy Funeral Home will handle arrangements.

A Week of Observance FFA Chapter Here Traces Accomplishments

The Monroe High School Future Farmers of America chapter joins 9 000 chapters nationwide for National FFA Week led by advisor Kenneth C. Allen. The 96 members include 84 in vocational agriculture classes and 12 graduates in farming or related work. Officers are William E. Rotary observes 60th anniversary in Monroe luncheon

Pupils Build Rhythm Instruments From Everyday Treasures

In Monroe schools fourth and fifth graders crafted own rhythm instruments with help from parents. Bruce Patterson notes they gathered bottle cans spools wood coffee cans and more then assembled them with hammer nails wire sandpaper and paint. Instruments aid rhythm notation and note values learning and will be given to kindergartens or the school.

Muslim Leader Receives Threat Ahead of Chicago Convention

Chicago police stepped up security for Elijah Muhammad and the Black Muslim convention after two telephoned threats. One caller said Muhammad would have a lively convention and warned of 100 men from New York coming to kill him. A bomb was claimed planted in the Coliseum with a timing around Friday or Saturday.

George Hobart, 53, of Dakota Illinois, died at 11 30 this morning in St Clare Hospital He had been admitted three hours earlier.

Shriners honored at Green County Ladies Night event

About 150 guests including widows attended the Monroe Country Club tribute marking twenty years of Green County Shrine Club progress. Marshall T. Wilson praised growth from 11 founders in 1945 to 119 members by 1964 and cited the club as one of the finest Shrine groups.

Planes First Time Join Vietnamese War Air Campaign

U S jets joined the war against Viet Cong in South Vietnam with B57 bombers and F100 fighters. The strikes, conducted by Americans at the controls, followed heavy fighting in An Khe and Binh Dinh Province with mounting casualties on both sides.

Wildlife unit to teach conservation in county schools
