Assembly Judiciary Committee hearing draws 400 supporters and witnesses as 11 probate law overhaul proposals are debated. Capitol corridors echo with loudspeakers to broadcast the session to a larger crowd outside.
Teachers from Monroe School District and St Victor’s school attend an all day in-service at Monroe Junior High. The program opens with MHS chorus and jazz ensemble under Dolores Feldt and Joe Rieraldo. A 9:15 a.m. panel on Public Relations and Communications includes Joe Urban and James Glessner. A student panel led by six MHS students covers K-12 education strengths and weaknesses in Monroe. Afternoon sessions offer topics from modular scheduling to reading techniques and individualized math. Dr. William Halverson leads a followup 3:30 p.m. session. Thursday is a holiday. a Southwestern Education Association meeting follows Friday.
Israeli warplanes fired on a Libyan passenger plane near the Suez Canal and forced it to crash land in the Sinai Desert. About 70 people were killed, 13 survived and were rushed to a hospital. The Libyan 727 had entered Israeli airspace from the Mediterranean coast and ignored landing orders after warning shots. A Lebanese pilot reported hearing the phrase We got hit.
A 5.2 magnitude quake struck Los Angeles at 6 46 am local time. Thousands reported fear but no injuries or major damage. Felt within two hundred miles, with Malibu rockslides and a San Bernardino motorist remarking the shake felt like the engine fell out of his car.

Fire Chief Joe Benkert said escaping gas fed a heater flame, causing the interior to burn out. A neighboring unoccupied house also burned along the roof, with windows blown out. Hart family faced a $30,000 loss. second home damage estimated at $1,500 to $2,000. No injuries.
