Ice Jam Breaks River Route Through Davenport Floods

The Mississippi River rerouted by an ice jam eight miles south of Davenport threatens the Garden Addition and other West Davenport areas. Des Moines authorizes 50 National Guardsmen and three helicopters for flood relief as residents flee.

Selective Service Plans Testing a College Qualification Test

The Selective Service System announced a plan to close an e2 contract within days to offer a college qualification test to about 2 million college students and high school seniors. Local draft boards could grant student deferments for satisfactory progress or class standing, with test results provided before fall term. The first test is planned for May, with registration at least three weeks before, possibly as late as late April.

Final City Inspection Completed for Municipal Building

Aldermen and contractors conducted the official final inspection of the new Municipal Building Saturday. A Board of Public Works meeting this afternoon is to receive the report, with general satisfaction noted and only minor adjustments needed before the final $1,000 payment is authorized.

University of Wisconsin extension leader Warren Clark dies at 79

Niles Michigan. Warren Clark 79 emeritus professor and former director of the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Extension Division died Sunday. Clark a Sparta native had lived here in recent years and retired in 1952.

Chilly But Successful Monticello Derby Draws 100 Scouts

More than 100 Boy Scouts and 25 adult leaders and judges gathered at Zanders Lake Wildlife Area for a Klondike Derby featuring sled races and outdoor skills events. Eagle Patrol Troop 106 Monticello led by John Legler won overall skills. sled ace went to Don Barry’s Eagle Patrol Troop 114 Monroe. Bat Patrol Troop 101 Monroe led by Steve Hennager won sled judging.

Budget Committee Heads Monroe United Fund

Mrs Albert Budget Head is named chairman of the budget committee for the United Fund of Monroe. Mrs Donald Springer takes the new budget committee secretary post. Gov. Otto Kerner asked the Illinois Athletic Commission to revisit its decision to license the Cassius Clay Ernie Terrell heavyweight title bout in Chicago on March 29. Milk price supports eyed at 3.50 a hundred pounds

Rep. Melvin R. Laird said Secretary Freeman likely will announce a milk price support of 3.50 a hundred pounds with 3.7 pounds of butterfat for the new marketing year starting April 1. He urged a higher level up to 3.75 or 4 to ensure adequate supply and noted Wisconsin prices use 3.5 butterfat. The shortage causes and dairy-market dynamics are discussed, with Laird advocating maximum lawful action.

Monroe to allot 300 tickets for Friday cage game

Monroe High School plans to allocate about 300 tournament tickets for the Friday March 4 game at Ft Atkinson. Tickets will be split 150 adult and 150 student with a two ticket limit per family. A drawing will decide excess requests if demand exceeds supply.

Monroe architect Stanley W. Howe 63 died of a heart attack at home. Born May 11 1902 in Cadiz Township he studied in Monroe Eureka College and Chicago Technical College. He designed Monroe's municipal building and a parks bandshell and served as an architectural supervisor in WWII.
