A 114 year old rock formed building in downtown Benton on Highway 11 was gutted by fire of undetermined origin yesterday. Occupants in two apartments above escaped, firemen battled smoldering ruins as mutual aid from Hazel Green and Cuba City arrived. Two men worked downstairs converting the former grocery store into two more apartments when the alarm sounded just before noon. The owner, Walter Calvert, resides on a nearby farm.
