Los Angeles inspectors ruled 298 residences and apartments unsafe after surveying earthquake damaged suburbs. 1,017 living units required vacating. Red Cross set six emergency shelters in the Valley and aided evacuees in finding hotels motels and other temporary housing as aftershocks continued across the metro area.
In a private White House ceremony in the East Room President Nixon awarded the Medal of Honor to the families of 12 Americans who died heroically in Vietnam. Eight Army personnel and four Marines were honored as service musicians provided ceremonial touches.
Secret wartime documents reveal Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed peace with honor for Italy in exchange for surrender before the Allied invasion. Roosevelt and Churchill countered, stating Italy must accept unconditional surrender and not be promised such a peace.
In Tan Son Nhut, U. S. Air Force Col. Gerald V. Kehrli was found guilty of seven marijuana offenses. He received three years' imprisonment and a $15,000 fine. He was not dismissed, preserving pension eligibility. The 46 year old, with 28 years of service, allegedly directed enlisted men to obtain marijuana for him and gave it to unit members.
Gov. Patrick J. Lucey said he would press the federal government to end the Vietnam War and voiced support for a Wisconsin bill making it unlawful for a citizen to fight in an undeclared war outside the United States. He cited Massachusetts as a model and aimed for an effective pressure tool.
Tony Dechant, NFU president, urged a single federal milk marketing order at the Wisconsin Farmers Union competition. He said the current nearly 50 orders disadvantage Midwestern dairymen and called for a unified market price for Grade A milk sold to dairies, whether bottled or used for ice cream and cheese.
In Ankara, Turkey, Sgt. Jimmy Ray Finley of Fort Worth Texas was released unharmed after 17 hours in captivity. U S Air Force investigators questioned him as Turkish police hunted suspected leftist kidnappers linked to two bank robberies.
Policeman Ray Walsh recalls finding a hand grenade in an elevated train station near a lakefront park. He sped away with the weapon when the pin loosened and the grenade later exploded after he tossed it into the empty park seeking safety. Walsh described the moment with disbelief and humility.
Madison Mayor William D. Dyke told the Green County Republican Club Lincoln Day banquet that Abraham Lincoln defines America’s heritage and duty. About 150 attended at Monroe Country Club as Dyke warned of urban problems spreading to smaller towns without proper jurisdiction. He praised Nixon revenue sharing and urged bringing back funds to Wisconsin. Assemblyman Joseph Tregoning noted a Republican seat in the state assembly. Master of ceremonies Walter Ekum introduced local GOP leaders and officials including Monroe mayor Clifford Reasa.
At St Victor's gymnasium on Sunday February 14 the Cub Scouts of Pack 110 received Bear Wolf and gold arrows for members David Witt Chris Seward Matt Urban Alfred Corbins Kevin Siegel Steve Purcell and more. The Webern awards were handed to Keith Jacobson Mark Siegel Mike Metcalf James Hooper Steve Silvis Steve Harwick and Matt Urban. The Order of the Arrow Valley Indian Dancers debuted with Paul Severson as advisor and James Howe as Chief. Den mothers and adult leaders were honored, and Girl Scout troops assisted by serving the banquet.
In Los Angeles the 6.6 magnitude quake and aftershocks caused more than 1,000 dwellings to be condemned. Aftershocks ranged 3.5 to 3.9, centered in the Fernando Valley. A Monday tremor cut power in Granada Hills and residents reported cracked windows and new fissures in some buildings.
In Dallas County a 33 year old ex convict identified as Rene Adolpho Guzman is charged with murder after fatally shooting three of five kidnapped deputies during a burglary investigation. One deputy survived a gunshot wound and a fourth was wounded.
The U S Command reports five aircraft down in South Vietnam Laos and Cambodia with 22 Americans killed 22 wounded and one missing. Additional air strikes against SAM sites near North Vietnam were warned as the Ho Chi Minh trail operations continue.
The Green County Council of Church Women United presents the fourth festival based on hymns on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Monroe High School Gym. Choral director Merruth Seaton leads the program titled The Creation with 240 involved choristers from Albany Brodhead Clarno Monroe and surrounding churches. Deborah Krauss accompanies. Alvin C. Rabehl chairs the event.
