Salesman Marty Schmidt Dies at 38 Rites Tomorrow
Martin Richard Marty Schmidt 38 died of a cerebral hemorrhage at St. Clare Hospital after a severe headache. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at Mt Olive Lutheran Church with Rev. R F Bittorf officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He leaves seven children, his wife Helen, his mother in Watertown, six brothers and five sisters. Schmidt was born April 18 1927 in Faulkton SD and served in WWII. He was a longtime car salesman with connections to Montgomery Ward and Monroe Sales Co. He lived at 703 10th Ter Monroe. He was a member of the Moose Lodge. Burial arrangements and visitation details noted.

Seventeen Italian and Swiss workers suffocated in a tunnel at the Robbies hydro electric project north of Locarno in central Switzerland. Police said the carbonic gas swept through the northern tunnel as ventilation shafts were opened after winter. Two Hospitalized After Auto Accident in Tunaraa
Frank Erickson aged 21 of Hollandale and Leo Gross aged 21 of Blanchardville were treated at St. Clare's Hospital at 1:35 a.m. for injuries from an automobile mishap. Both were reported in good condition on arrival. Erickson had multiple lacerations contusions and possible head injuries. Gross had multiple bruises and possible head injuries.

Friday marks the start of a Heart Sunday canvass as 200 volunteers plan to call on neighbors through February 20. Dr. Ovid O. Meyer, former UW Medicine chair, spoke at the Heart Forum in the May Luchsinger Room while the drive aims to raise funds with a February 26 benefit show “Song In My Heart” at the Monroe Junior High School. Local organizers include Mrs. Walter J. Kubly and Alpha Zeta Sorority, with WKOW host John Schermerhorn as emcee. The event will spotlight Wisconsin Heart Association leaders Rolland E. Karlen and Kenneth Trierweiler. Dr. Meyer noted heart disease as the leading cause of death, affecting millions nationwide and 250,000 in Wisconsin.
