General Nathan F. Twining returns to public life as he speaks to 700 chamber of commerce members and guests in Turner Hall. He expresses gratitude and emotion while Dr. W. B. Gnagi, chamber president, notes the significance of Twining's reception and leadership.
Four star general Twining traveled by car to Madison to pick up a B 17 and fly to Washington for a 430 p m appointment. He was driven to Madison by Dr and Mrs W B Gnagi his sister Mrs Phoebe Chadwick and Harold A Blumer.
Gen Nathan F. Twining's reunion with old friends at the American Legion gathering in Milwaukee, and his Coral Sea survival story aboard a Flying Fortress. He recounted five days adrift with Col Jamison and 13 crewmen, describing a dramatic ditching, survival hardships, a single albatross meal, and renewed resolve on atomic weapon implications.
Madison lawmakers consider deferring young men essential to agriculture and manufacturing to sustain national defense production. Sen Knowles proposes a resolution asking officials to delay induction for vital workers. Senators Gettelman La Fond and Krueger back a separate bill to shift motor vehicle department oversight back to the secretary of state.

Thirty names have been drawn for jury service in Green County Court terms of 1951. Miss Lois Faubel and Judge Harold J. Lamboley oversee the process with a panel slated for five county court terms in February April June September and November. The list includes residents from Albany Blanchardville Brodhead Monroe Juda Monticello and New Glarus township among others with addresses and routes noted.
Assemblywoman Ruth Doyle introduces a bill to abolish about 5000 rural districts in Wisconsin and create county based boards. Each of 71 counties would elect six school board members, appoint a county superintendent, set salaries and taxes, and implement a uniform county tax to equalize levies.
Lansing Michigan 19 year old state employee Richard C Shay confessed starting a 4.5 million dollar state office building fire and asked for an examination on two arson counts during arraignment Municipal Judge Earl E McDonald set February 23 as the examination date and ordered a $20000 bail in view of the seriousness of the charge He previously admitted starting the fire to avoid military service.
New avalanches sweep Switzerland and Italy killing at least 21 to 22 people with up to 130 dead in late January storms. Continued snow and thaws keep danger at maximum across the Swiss Italian Austrian and French Alps as roads are buried and the Gotthard line halted.

Stock market gains led by Aircrafts as New York-4-Aircrafts rose over 2 percent while most of the list lagged. Zenith climbed to around 71 percent, with Chrysler GM New York Central Pennsylvanian railroad and Montgomery Ward showing less strength.
