Wolleson Home Damaged by Fire Attic Blaze on 14th Avenue

Firefighters battled an attic fire at the Louis R. Wolleson residence, 1402 14th Avenue, for two hours in near zero temperatures. The blaze damaged furnishings and half the roof, believed caused by a defective chimney. Insurance adjusters to assess losses.

Rebels Die as France Clashes in Eastern Algeria

French forces report 100 rebels killed and large quantities of arms seized in two clashes in eastern Algeria. The engagements occurred Sunday night and Monday, with operations spanning the region and resulting in significant enemy losses.

Farmers to be honored at Monroe conservation institute

Eight area farmers will receive awards at the Monroe Conservation and Dairy Farmer's Institute in Turner Hall on February 20. Two will be named Outstanding Young and Senior Farmers by the Monroe Jaycees, with six others honored for soil and water conservation. The all day event is hosted by the Jaycees with the Green County Soil Conservation District, county extension, Monroe vocational agriculture and Commercial and Savings Bank. A noon luncheon is served by Jaycee members. The program features a film, speaker Nick Calabresa on the Soil Bank, a day and silage show, a county wide Big M meeting on marketing, management and mastitis, and a women’s program. The event is open to all farmers.

Wisconsin Milk Hit Record 17.5 Billion Pounds in 1957

Colin Wilson Wright a retired railroad official 71 formerly of Monroe died Sunday at his Clearwater home. He built his Florida residence after retiring as vice president and general counsel for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway Co. Funeral details were not announced.

Milwaukee Fire Claims Twenty Firefighters In Big City Blaze

A two story building in Milwaukee’s south side district burned from 7 p m to 10 p m under near zero weather as winds pushed flames 100 feet high. Twenty firefighters were felled and damage topped 400000 dollars. Fire officials said the cause was undetermined and more than 150 firefighters battled the blaze. The building housed a jewelry store restaurant camera shop optometrist clinic and tavern with the roof and walls collapsing in places. No serious injuries were reported beyond burns and frostbite.

Five Teens Die in Idaho River Car Crash

In Pocatello Idaho a carload of high school students veered off a dark street and plunged into the Portneuf River.
