Badger Briefs reports Wisconsin's 1973 highway toll reached 78 as a man was found dead in a parked car. The item notes the year-to-date figure compared to 74 at the same time last year.
City council approves a new sewer ordinance with residential charges rising to 75 percent of the water bill and commercial rates to 150 to 250 percent. Three ordinances read for the first time cover land Annexation, operator license age, and tavern closing hours. Public hearings set for March 7 and February 20.
Washington AP Henry Kissinger began a postwar mission to Hanoi and Peking with stops in Bangkok and Vientiane to seek North Vietnamese talks on reconstruction and U S Chinese thaw. He meets Thai leaders and ambassadors before Laos cease fire discussions.
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce Board met at the Monroe Clinic to hear about the newly appointed Advisory Council led by Harold Snively. The council will aid in selecting activities while the retail committee advances plans to revitalize the downtown. A tourism group led by Mrs Warner Bernet and Ron Spielman is exploring ways to draw visitors and a survey is sent to Green County cheesemakers. A seminar on Bill 1057 with Edgar E. Lien is scheduled after a noon luncheon at the VFW Clubhouse, with free admission.
President Nixon visited Sen. John C. Stennis in Washington as doctors reported slight improvement in the 71 year old Mississippi Democrat after gunshot wounds. Nixon’s meeting followed news of his condition and ongoing recovery.
In Madison the Assembly approved a 65 32 vote for a constitutional amendment to legalize bingo games run by nonprofit religious or fraternal groups. The Senate passed a similar 23 10 measure, making voter consideration in the April election likely if both chambers approve.
Recreation Supervisor Tom Faralli warns that Lake Francis ice is too thin to skate with open water around the edges. People should stay away and wait for official notification in the Times and on WEKZ before skating resumes.
Judge William G. Callow of the Waukesha County juvenile court spoke at Monroe High School on the 18 year old adult law and teen wrongdoing. He warned that minor involvement with drugs, forged IDs, shoplifting, or teenage marriage can yield lifelong penalties and civil rights loss. He urged honesty, cautioned about secret relationships, and urged students to use life wisely as a gift.
