Allied forces advancing through Manila pursued remaining Japanese holdouts in smoke shrouded districts along the Pasig river. Explosions and arson devastated Escolta avenue, water mains were blown, and fires raged as MacArthur declared the enemy responsible for the destruction. Allied units including the first cavalry, 37th Infantry, and Eleventh Airborne pressed the mop up amid stiff resistance near Nichols Field.
Citizens gather support for a commemorative post office stamp marking the 100th anniversary of New Glarus and its Swiss cheese industry. Washington London and Moscow announce that Roosevelt Churchill and Stalin reached complete agreement on joint WWII operations to end Germany. The release lists three topics: occupation of Germany, liberated Europe issues, and establishing a permanent peacekeeping organization. Continuous meetings expected with a communique at conference end.
County supervisors closed a one day session after approving a $200 cost of living raise for Miss Hazel Calhoun the supervising teacher and permitting the county clerk to hire help for fox bounty claims. They consider waiving $4100 interest on property to aid laundry and asylum water connections. A protest against traffic fines and jail meals updates were also discussed.
Russian forces widened bridgeheads along the Oder south of Kuestrin as Zhukov's assault drove toward Berlin. Konev's advance breached the Oder on a 50 mile front, advancing past Breslau, while heavy artillery pounded the Kuestrin Frankfurt zone. Berlin warned of intensified fighting from Slovakia to East Prussia and near Stettin as Soviet forces pressed toward central Germany.
A Monroe passerby reported a roof fire at Henry Kramer’s farm just east of Monroe. Police Chief Schwieger Patrolman Hefty and street department workers aided in extinguishing the fire after a chimney spark ignited the roof. Three roof holes were burned. the family had thought the chimney fire out earlier.
Allied forces of the British 14th Army clash with Japanese units in the Irrawaddy Chindwin confluence triangle about 40 miles west of Mandalay, Burma. The military communique reported ongoing resistance and operations in the area.
Radio and screen comedian Jack Benny cancels his planned army and navy hospital tour in the Chicago area due to illness. The act was to visit multiple facilities this week but is rescheduled for next week. Benny’s illness postpones appearances with his touring show and related engagements in Illinois.
In Brisbane, Mrs. Douglas MacArthur, under a policy she follows since arriving in Australia three years ago, declines public comment on Manila's fall. An aid states she has never spoken for publication and cannot do so without Manila HQ approval. The policy remains in force, with only General Headquarters able to grant permission.
Aftonbladet said a reorganization was imminent in which Hitler would give up the title of Fuehrer to become Reich president with Franz von Papen as chancellor. The rumor, attributed to Berlin circles, suggested a trial balloon to gauge Allied response for possible armistice terms.
Allied forces of the American Third Army push into Germany on a 22 mile front threading the Our and Sure rivers between Echternach and Clervaux. Patton's divisions breach fortifications as Eisenhower announces a continuous 120 mile western front from Holland to Saarlautern. Far north Ninth and Second Armies advance past 35 miles of the Siegfried line while First and Third push to the first West Wall on a 57 mile sector. Initial gains place troops inside Germany near pillboxes as six armored and airborne divisions spearhead the invasion. Foot troops approach three miles from Pruem, intercepting enemy transit bases in the north.
Florence Nokutis, 30, mother of 6 year old Patricia Attaway who died of lymphatic leukemia in Aurora NL Jan 9, obtained a divorce from Joseph Nokutis 35, a barber, on cruelty grounds. She plans remarriage to Patricia's father Floyd M. Attaway, Chief Petty Officer, currently in the Pacific. Attaway and Mrs Nokutis were at their daughter's bedside through a month long vigil.
Two inspectors from the Wisconsin Industrial Commission visit the Deaconess hospital building to assess if it can safely accommodate food packaging machinery planned by General Dairy Products Co. which recently bought the building. A bronze tablet honoring Dr. N. A. Loofbourow will be preserved with cooperation from Mrs. May Luchsinger and Anton Negri.
County nurse Martha Tschudy told the Green county board that tuberculosis deaths rose from an average of 3% to seven in 1944, with most victims aged 51 to 77. She noted Wisconsin also saw an upswing, attributed to wartime conditions, as she prepares to resign.
Vansittart told the House of Lords he knows of sinister Germans escaping Germany with false passports and urged denying asylum to war criminals. In Moscow an editorial accused Argentina of harboring Hitler agents, saying German planes from Stuttgart reach Barcelona and then Argentina.
