The Green County Board continued the annual report session and planned to review pending court action against the city over zoning jurisdiction at 3 p.m. A potential Friday recess would allow Farm and Home Week attendance at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
The Monroe Kiwanis Club announced a four yearly safe driving award for local teens. Oscar N Johnson said rules are pending but the first award likely April 1. Recipients will be selected by representatives from the Monroe Police Department the Sheriff s Department and the high school student council.
The Minnesota and Ontario Paper Co announces a $4 per ton increase in newsprint shipments effective March 1. The Monroe Evening Times will pay $135 per ton as several major firms raise prices on newspaper paper shipments.
Propane air gas leaked from mains in downtown Reno caused three blasts that destroyed five buildings on Sierra street. Two people were killed and 41 injured. five missing were later found. Damage surpassed two million dollars as crews cleared rubble and searched the wreckage.
Madison in Wisconsin reports American cheese barely to steadily trading with fair to good demand and ample to liberal supplies. Cheddars daisies long horns and midgets listed at 34 to 38 or 36 to 38 percent. Swiss blocks State brand 38 to 40 cents, other grades 32 to 38 cents.
The Green Bay City Council approved selling a $950,000 bond issue for a new 32,000 seat stadium to a Chicago banking house. The council also received a Packers lease stating the NFL team will pay half the issue in rental over the next 21 years.
Madison Wis The Wisconsin Assembly approved a plan by 98 to 0 to legalize cash for room and board paid to legislators for 18 days in October 1955. The measure pockets 11 652 already paid during the session and includes the funds in a deficiency bill to avert refunds. The overall bill funds 6 026 million and covers backlog needs.
A Wisconsin forest expert said 242 million acres could become profitable forest lands as population and per capita wood consumption rise. UW extension forester T A Peterson noted no surplus of paper and urged farmers to adopt practical advances to cut labor costs, including barn remodeling with extension service help.
County Board approves Judge Marshall L. Petersons account of estate work for a single client last year after his agreed non practice status. The vote follows his May notice to former chairman Clarence Loveland and confirmation from Loveland and others that the matter was handled properly.
Rep. Laird and Wisconsin colleagues pressed Secretary Benson to review dairy price supports starting April 1. They asked for a 1.0 cent rise to 36.0 cents per pound for cheddar, citing telegrams from Gov. Thomson and cheese groups. Laird said further talks with USDA will address inequalities between Class 1 milk prices and manufacturing milk supports.
The Monroe City Council approved the appointment of Nathan L. Goetz to the fire and police Commission. An alderman urged council help for Armour and Co to locate a stockyard near Monroe, replacing plans for a site at 5th Avenue. Crandall resigned from the commission. Goetz succeeds him. The Zoning Board granted a hog concentration yard permit at 5th Avenue edge, despite local petitions against it. Mayor Dunwiddie reappointed Sebastian Laeser Jr. to the United Fund. Transfer of Felder’s tavern cigarette license to George Hollenstein approved. Accounts of $2,796.18 approved. Water Board authorized to rehabilitate Well No. 4. flow down from 850 to 500 GPM. The United States signals reluctance to act alone on sanctions against Israel if it does not withdraw from Egypt. Secretary Dulles cites possible UN action and hopes Israel will withdraw, while Eisenhower stresses commitment to UN support.
Multiple crashes in the Monroe area left two women injured this morning and several residents uninjured in a third mishap. Betty Blumer of Albany suffered a broken forearm and bruises after losing control on Highway 59 near Maple Leaf Cheese. Onna Wartenweiler of Monticello sustained forehead lacerations and bruises when a school bus collision occurred near the Chaletroy north of Monroe.
The New York stock market fell further in moderate trading as analysts viewed President Eisenhower’s statement on potential inflation controls as a sign of intensified government action if business and labor do not address inflation.
The House Ways and Means Committee voted to extend corporate income and excise taxes for one year at the current 30 billion dollar rate. Treasury Secretary Humphrey warned extending taxes prevents red ink but said levies are too high and will slow growth, with no immediate tax cuts promised.

Fred Gobeli of Juda reports his farm has born a third consecutive set of twin calves. He had four fresh cows and seven calves last week. one Holstein cow gave birth to a single calf, then two more sets of twins appeared followed by the third set from the fourth cow. He has been farming 12 years and had only one prior twin set.
