Sheriff moves family from county amid tribal tension in Neopit

Partial vetoes upheld on voter registration and redevelopment bills

Wisconsin Senate votes 31 to 0 to uphold Gov. Patrick Lucey’s partial vetoes on a voter registration bill easing registration methods and a tax increment financing bill excluding towns from redevelopment districts. The 19 to 11 vote preserves Lucey’s towns exclusion pending program results.

Orientation Night at Monroe High School

A two in one orientation evening for eighth graders and their parents and for parents and upperclassmen will be held at Monroe High School starting at 7 30 p m in the Lecture Hall. School counselors will discuss graduation and academic requirements while teachers are available for talks and tours. A choral group will entertain and the Orchesis Club will perform with refreshments in the Instructional Media Center.

Voigt Named Head of DNR Committee for Reorganization

Lester Voigt was appointed to lead a 13 member staff panel to propose changes to the Wisconsin DNR. Secretary Anthony Earl ordered the group to review the six district field system and suggest ways to decentralize operations and improve citizen access. The panel will report after May 1.

About a dozen demonstrators occupied a reception room outside Governor Patrick J. Lucey in Madison protesting the shooting deaths of two Menominee County men They demanded Lucey dismiss Menominee County Sheriff Kenneth Fish and accused the governor of ignoring petitions from 19 local residents Lucey’s counsel said the governor will take no action until the facts are in and cannot judge local law enforcement.

Death of Waubanascum May Not Alter Gresham Trial

A Juneau judge said it is too early to tell what impact the death of defendant John Waubanascum will have on the five defendants in the Indian takeover case. Waubanascum and Arlin Pamanet died in a gunfire exchange at Waubanascum’s Menominee County home. No continuance request had been filed, and counsel indicated facts are not yet clear. The other four defendants face ongoing Dodge County trials after a venue change.
