About 100000 General Electric workers voted nearly three to one to approve a new contract ending a 101 day strike. Some will return to work today, others by Monday, while 30000 strikers’ ballots remained unreported. AFL CIO’s IUE spokesman said local conditions will drive return timing.
A search plane sighted the twin engine Argentina airliner wreck in a swamp near the Parana River west bank in Chaco Province. The craft departed Corrientes Wednesday night with 38 aboard for Rosario and there were no signs of life.
Sen. Joseph D. Tydings warned he will delay Senate Judiciary Committee action on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Harrold Carswell by at least a week. Sen. Charles E. Goodell prepared to announce opposition, leaving Proxmire and Mondale as the only other senators publicly opposing at that time.
Police investigators in Cleveland believe Martin Berns a 21 year old former mental patient acted alone in bombing the Shaker Heights municipal building. The explosion leveled the colonial style structure injuring 15 and Berns has not been seen since.
Linda Zacchini age 31 suffered a broken neck after her husband Emanuel 25 plummeted onto her during the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey finale in Jacksonville Florida. Both were listed in critical and serious condition respectively after emergency surgery and net collision.
Mequon Mayor James Egan urged Governor Warren P. Knowles on Wednesday to issue an executive order to curb a Milwaukee northern suburbs dump fire burning since November 16, 1968. The blaze had burned 445 days and spurred calls for intensified abatement efforts.
President Nixon and the Urban Affairs Council visit Indianapolis to meet nine mayors including Republicans, focus on model cities and anticrime measures, then head to Chicago for a governors' environmental talk. Monroe police have custody of two youths aged 13 and 14 after long investigations into vandalism complaints. Elderly First Ward residents report harassment and property damage including littered lawns obscene calls and broken glass from firecrackers. Three year old Gene C Bates, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas L Bates of Monroe, remains in critical condition after being struck by a car in the 2500 block of 13th Avenue Wednesday morning. He suffered a skull fracture brain damage and partial paralysis as hospital officials reported. The incident followed the boy running in front of a parked vehicle after a semi trailer passed. the car driven by Robert A Sica of Elgin Illinois could not avoid the impact.
Robert Dearth of Dearth Motors received the Monroe Chamber of Commerce resolution at the 47th Annual Chamber Supper at Monroe Country Club. Keith Seward presented the resolution recognizing Dearth's leadership and service in 1969, with thanks to his family and employer. John Fernan introduced speaker Robert L. Gast who urged community involvement and forward-looking leadership.
The Monroe Business and Professional Women’s Club met at Swiss Colony Inn for a 4 noon luncheon to discuss the district meet to be held in Monroe on April 19. Chairmen of arrangements are Mrs James Bray and Mrs Orlean Wahl. The club also notes a Gold Circle Pin for member growth and an invitation from the Madison PBW Club to attend their March or April meeting.
Three Wednesday traffic incidents slowed Green County roads as bad weather and drifting snow reduced visibility. Monroe drivers Robert Hendrickson and Virgil Washsel collided at 16th Avenue and 13th Street, while Laurin McLeod from Richland Center hit Robert Brown’s truck at Sixth Street and 20th Avenue. Rolland Karlen lost control on Highway 81 hitting posts and a ditch crash. Senator Nelson warned of a youth driven environmental revolt if action is not taken.
