The Associated Press reports a broad Florida cold wave with temperatures dropping rapidly and forecasts of subfreezing readings. The Weather Bureau warned of potential crop damage as the front drives southward and thunderstorms affected some locales. Vero Beach area noted among affected regions.
The Monroe sewage plant logged 16 below zero at 8 a.m with 14 below at 9:30 a.m in Uptown. The Evening Times notes a nightly low of 12 below and four below at 9:30 a.m. Yesterday’s high reached minus two in both locations.
A cold front sent lows to 34 below in Iowa and 81 in southeast Florida while many areas suffered frost, rain, and snow. The Weather Bureau predicted lingering bitter conditions and widespread school closures in Kentucky and Tennessee as storms disrupted normal operations and damaged crops in places from Hawaii to New York.
The Rotary Club of Monroe presents the Travel and Adventure Series in the Junior High School Auditorium at 7 30. Russ Potter will show his travel film India Land of Spectacular featuring scenes with the Dalai Lama of Tibet and visits to Delhi Calcutta Bombay and Madras. Firemen answered a chimney blaze at Alvin Kundert’s Cadiz Township farm operated by Laverne Rule around 10 50 p m yesterday. No serious damage reported. Josef Benkert, fire chief, stated the department returned to Monroe about an hour later. the farm lies seven miles south of Monroe.
Mrs William C Meador 30 of Lanark Illinois died at 1130 p m yesterday at St Clare Hospital where she was admitted January 16 The body will lie in state at the Frank Funeral Home Lanark
Four new members joined the executive board at the Green County Red Cross Chapter annual meeting including Hubert Rockow George Grenzow Mrs Irene Brunkow and C O Brunkow. The chapter honored three Monroe volunteers for 40 plus hours and listed extensive officer and chair roles for the coming year. Huston started a first aid class in Grant County marking a regional growth in Red Cross training.
A new program titled Market Magic will begin Thursday February 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Turner Hall. John MacInnis chairs a series run by First National Bank and area grocers to help housewives get more from their food dollars with sessions on meats produce and dairy. Tickets are free from local grocers and events include a meat cutting demonstration a Shopping Tour of Europe film prizes and refreshments. The series runs biweekly and is open to the public.
U.S. officials said today they see no possibility of Indonesia producing an atomic bomb in the near future, easing regional concerns about nuclear proliferation. They emphasized assessments based on current capabilities and geopolitical considerations.
Gov. Knowles asked the Wisconsin Legislature for a record 832.8 million dollar two year budget starting July 1, with 110.7 million in new taxes. The plan highlights education funding, a 10 year personal property tax relief program, and a 33.5 million retirement package.
In Washington the Senate has passed three major bills including a 1.9 billion Appalachian aid package and an antipollution water program as House committees race to advance Johnson’s Great Society agenda. Speaker McCormack gained power to bypass the Rules Committee after a 224 201 vote signaling a not runaway Congress.
Postmaster General John A. Gronouski urged Congress to end the Postal Savings System after a 54 year run. Depositors shrank from 4.2 million in 1947 to about 1 million, and deposits fell from $3.4 billion to $416 million, with average accounts dropping from $808 to $387 as banks offered higher rates and broader access. He planned a two year phaseout and authority to stop accrual of interest after a set date.
Herbert C. Paske of Wisconsin Power and Light spoke to the Rotary Club of Monroe detailing the utility’s 1924 incorporation, current service area about 15 000 square miles, 650 000 customers in 388 communities, and a rise in power plant output. He highlighted cost reductions for residential electricity, the Four Fold Goal framework, and the company’s community development efforts.

Carl J. Gerhart 81 died unexpectedly yesterday at his Madison home. Coroner cites heart attack. He lived there since 1921, born Rose Creek Minnesota, retired maintenance worker at American Family Insurance, member of St Bernard's Church. Survived by daughter, two sons, Warren and Mathew, brothers and sisters in Minnesota, six grandchildren. Visitation at Schroeder Funeral Home begins this afternoon. Rosary at 8 tonight. Body to be taken to Austin Minnesota for funeral and burial planned.
Panama may proceed solo to build a sea level Isthmian canal by borrowing from institutions such as the World Bank, Foreign Minister Fernando Eleta says. The proposal centers on financing options and national capability without a multilateral agreement.
