The new federal budget totals $200.8 billion with an expected population of 205 million from the 1970 census. Each person would bear about $979, split among national defense $358 space programs $17 education and manpower $39 income security $245 and interest on the debt $86. Other items account for the remainder.
A cross country express derailed into a halted suburban train near Buenos Aires injuring many and killing 160. Officials said the 21 car express from San Miguel de Tucuman struck a 10 car suburban train halted for mechanical trouble. It is the worst rail disaster in Argentine history.
For the fourth straight day Syrian and Israeli tanks and artillery fought along the Golan Heights with Israel using jets to strike Syria. Israel claimed two Syrian tanks and several artillery positions were destroyed while Syria said its anti aircraft guns downed an Israeli jet and Syrian planes shot down another in a dog fight. Israeli command denied any Israeli planes were hit. The four days of action mark the heaviest fighting along the border since 1967.

Donald Rowe of Gratiot was chosen to represent Lafayette County dairy farmers on AMPI Tri State Region District Four advisory board. The Lafayette district also elected John Stauffacher as president with LeRoy King, Paul Wilson, Earl Wilson, and Robert Siegenthaler in key posts. Six delegates were named to represent about 50 members each. Additional Wisconsin meetings for new district organization are planned for February 9. AMPI, with 26 000 members, spans from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico and accounts for about ten percent of U.S. milk production.
