Monroe Post Office Reports Holiday Mail Surge

Monroe postmaster Russell J. Myers announced a holiday period mail increase with 306000 cancellations, up 32000 from last year’s 274000 through last Thursday. Meter settings deposits rose to 109308 from 100909, not counting 35000 additional metered mail. daily peak stayed 31000, with two days at that level this year vs one in 1963.

Mrs. Hurlbut Taken by Death in Butte Montana

Mrs. Stewart W. Hurlbut 48 of Butte Montana died during the night. She was born Katherine Schindler in Monroe, daughter of Charles A. and Ada E. Kundert Schindler. Survived by husband, three daughters Ellen Ann and Beth, and her Monroe lineage noted. Officials expect details after telephonic contact with Mr. Hurlbut.

Tiber River Flood Spurs Safety Evacuations in Rome

Tiber River overflowed in Rome on Tuesday night with waters five feet deep along the northern edge. Firemen and police moved about 200 persons, many housed in makeshift barracks, to safety.

Patrol Increase Opposition Noted

Madison Wisconsin County Traffic Police Association opposed a plan to nearly double the State Traffic Patrol. Fond du Lac County official Leo T. Flaherty argued extra enforcement should come at the county level. Karns proposed adding 215 patrolmen funded by a $4 license fee increase to raise about $4.5 million.

Robert Scarrah Admit Robbery In Slayings Case

Fond du Lac district attorney says itinerant laborer Robert L. Scarrah of Lomira faces first degree murder and armed robbery charges in the holdup slaying of Richard Sigler at a Clark service station nine miles south of Fond du Lac. Scarrah allegedly admitted the robbery but recalled nothing else.
