Year of uneasy peace ends with world watching Reds
In 1949 the world saw a year of maneuvers toward war as the United States kept strategic edges from the atomic era while communism expanded in Asia and Europe. China fell to communists, Asia and eastern Europe came under their control, and the West faced Berlin airlifts and a divided Germany. The Atlantic pact and Marshall Plan strengthened western cohesion as the UN failed to gain atomic control. The year closed with the cold war unresolved and tensions high.
