Flood Cleanup Starts in West
Northern California faced the worst floods in its history as two weeks of bad weather gave way to clearer skies. Death toll reached 34 with 19 to 35 or more missing, while damage neared 150 million dollars. Army Navy Air Force and Coast Guard crews used boats trucks helicopters and planes to rescue and evacuate, helping reduce deaths by hundreds. Over a million acres flooded, and as rivers receded new assessments showed widespread inundation from the Oregon border to Visalia. Flooding eased with the high tide passing the San Joaquin Sacramento delta area absent further flooding. Two delta islands Empire Tract and Quimby Island were flooded when levees caved in. State officials plan to mobilize federal aid crews within two days to oversee rehabilitation efforts. Governor Knight ordered 300 more National Guards to Yuba City and Marysville as Northern Pacific resumed transcontinental service over the Sierra.

New Year Holiday Traffic Toll Seen At Record Levels
National Safety Council officials predict a three day New Year weekend toll of 420 deaths on streets and roads along with 56 fatalities during the Christmas period. The earlier record for a New Year holiday is 407 in the four day span ending 1952-53. Ned H. Dearborn notes the cold figures demand acceptance of sharper driving habits. Past holiday periods in 1955 show 2,119 traffic deaths and 3,156 deaths from all accidents.

Driver License Tests Launched by State Examining Force
State examiners begin the first driver license examinations outside Milwaukee and Madison. Former Monroe residents Archibalds evacuated from Soquel California during floods and are back home. Evelyn Hartwig of Monroe reported to uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Orville McQuillan in Santa Cruz. Neighbors Milton Andrews and McQuillans faced power and phone outages but remained on higher ground. Capitola residents near Monroe were also safe. Frances Kleinmaier, daughter of Mrs. Raseveed, was marooned in Stockton but safe.

Mrs Beightol of Oakley Dies After Illness
Mrs. Beightol 62 Oakley died yesterday at 1 15 PM at home after a cancer diagnosis. She underwent surgery September 6 1954 at Rochester Minnesota and was a patient at St Clare Hospital in September this year. Born November 24 1893 in Jefferson Township she married William A Beightol December 21 1911 in Grace Lutheran parsonage Monroe. They farmed in Jefferson and Spring Grove townships before moving to their present home in 1926. Surviving are her husband a daughter Mrs Robert Preston Sylvester Township five grandchildren and a brother Earl Randall Oakley She was preceded in death by a daughter Mrs Jasper F Matzke December 4 1954 and a sister Lola at age 13 She belonged to Union Evangelical United Brethren Church and Missionary Society Services Friday at 2 PM in Union Church Oakley with Rev William King and Rev Peter Ratzlaff officiating Burial in the church cemetery The body will be at Shriner Neu Shwander funeral home until Friday noon.
