In the mid Pacific a Vietnam bound cargo ship with 2000 tons of TNT bombs and rockets burned while a Greek freighter hunted missing crewmen. Fourteen of the 39 crew were rescued within hours by the Khian Star, the only nearby vessel.

Blanchardville resident Anton Hanson will celebrate his 94th birthday on Tuesday December 30. A retired lumber yard worker of 14 years, he was born in York Township Green County and spent 20 years farming before moving to Blanchardville with his wife Lena Wamstad. They married in 1913 after a bobsled ride to Blanchardville. Hanson is the last surviving child in a nine person family. his wife is the last among twelve. The couple, active in church and community, have a son in Birmingham Alabama, two daughters nearby, and a granddaughter in Portland Oregon. He formerly served on Blanchardville’s village board. Both are members of Blanchardville Lutheran Church.
Doctors report a newborn in Tucson showing classic heroin withdrawal signs within a day of birth at Tucson Medical Center. The infant, born to Yaqui parents, was treated for 15 days and discharged to live with his grandmother after hospital involvement with addiction treatment for the parents.
