A Wis hotel blaze killed one man and injured several others after smoke and heat drove people into near freezing air. Fire officials traced the fire to a cigarette in a room at the Northland Hotel, with 63-year-old Edaga Shepard found deceased.
Friends of Roy True, former Monroe Air Service proprietor, have started a relief fund after a crash landing near Beloit left him with multiple injuries. He underwent surgery to remove his right eye and faces further skull fracture repairs. True remains conscious with limited visitors and can receive mail at Madison General Hospital Room 323.
Eddie Rudy, 99, of rural Orangeville, misses his dog Sandy after more than a month apart. The family hopes a Times Saturday notice will bring Sandy home and offers a $100 reward. Contact 789 4561 is the number to call.
An election notice in The Monroe Evening Times sets the April 2 balloting. County Clerk Ray E. Kundert notes the notice concerns County Board supervisors whose terms end on the third Tuesday of April 1968. Rally is expected as New York stock market rises early.
A total loss blaze at the Chet Noble residence near the junction of Highway 11 and County Trunk KK, two miles east of Gratiot, destroyed furniture and clothing. Firefighters from Gratiot, with help from South Wayne and Wiota, arrived about 2:30 PM, finding flames from the upper area and a roof fire. Noble, a bachelor employed in Freeport, was not home. he had moved in six weeks earlier, and another Gratiot residence remains. The prior owners included Joseph Wand and Frank Boelk. the house is now owned by Richard Sebern of Emmetsburg, Ia. The fire is believed caused by electrical wiring.
The Associated Press reports a new all time highway death record for Wisconsin of 1 128 in a single year, marked by a 24 fatality Christmas weekend. The period counted from 6 p m Friday to midnight Monday includes many victims across multiple counties and towns.
A near head on collision on Highway 69 near Monroe killed Kenneth B. Everson 18 and Alfred J. Bohling 36. Coroner ruled accident, no inquest. Toll to 12 for 1967. Everson buried East Wiota Lutheran. Bohling from Madison, survived by two children. Three other accidents reported, minor injuries.

A Christmas Day girl was born at St. Clare Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Mitchell of South Wayne. She weighed eight pounds two ounces and arrived at 11 50 a m. The couple had expected a boy and will decide on a name before the day ends. Mrs. Mitchell is Carol Jean Trumpy, daughter of Mrs. Jean Trumpy of Monroe. The baby’s father is Arlie Mitchell, whose parents are from Monroe. Grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Frank Trumpy of Monroe and Mrs. Lela Gage of The child’s father attends Platteville University.
Well known retired farmer Charles E. Krueger age 87 of 1717 15th St died at noon Christmas Day in St. Clare Hospital after hospital admission on December 23. He was born February 12, 1880 in Monroe Township and lived on farms in the area before moving to his current home 21 years ago. He and Dorothea Asmus married November 25, 1902 and observed their 65th anniversary last month. He served in numerous community roles including church official board member and Sunday school class leader. He chaired agricultural displays at the Green County Fair for 16 years and held roles on local school boards and the Swiss Cheese Factory. Surviving are his widow and three daughters.
