Swiss ambassador Giovanni Bucher faces a death sentence threat from leftist kidnappers who demand 13 more names be added to the 51 prisoners set for release. Officials say 70 prisoners were asked at first, with 51 approved and 19 rejected for release due to crime, end of term, or family ties to previous ransom cases.
Bob Hope landed in Vietnam to perform for about 15,000 soldiers at a base near Hue. He joked that troops are growing their own grass and suggested sending it to Paris negotiators, drawing the loudest laughter from the crowd.
A study funded by the American Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation shows newspaper employment rising from 248,500 to 373,200, a 50.2 percent increase while national employment grew 37.5 percent. The report notes strong gains in smaller daily papers and predicts millions more readers.

Freezing rain Tuesday night left Green County highways slick with a 10 degree drop by morning. Snow flurries and packed ice worsened travel as salt effectiveness declined. National Weather Service issued a travelers warning and many districts canceled classes. Temperatures to plunge further and Christmas day expected to be cold with mixed highs.
Green County Social Services staff hosted a dinner for Ray F. Kaskey in Marco's to honor his Dec 28 transfer to Outagamie County as Deputy Director. Ronald L. Thronson of the Wisconsin Public Welfare Association sent a letter of success, and Kaskey cited Churchill Woods Apartments as a key accomplishment.
