Holiday shopping hits peak in Monroe with crowded stores and long walks from cars. Post office expects volume to rise with late rural deliveries and no city or rural delivery on Christmas day though lobby hours extend. County court and The Times print will pause as workers observe the holiday.
A wartime arrangement kept cheese plants under large corporate leases, with daily requests to return plants to their original owners. The report notes about 808 plants were affected prior to last October, most of them under this system.
The first leases to be canceled were by Kraft in this area, with 40 percent of its Swiss factory penying quickly followed by similar actions. Since then nearly all leases in the state have been cancelled by Kraft and other firms.

The United States Chamber of Commerce announced plans to mobilize its 2,000 member organizations to back a congressional drive to relieve employers from portal-to-portal pay liabilities dating back to 1938. The move follows rising worker claims for pay at overtime rates for travel and nonproduction time. The chamber will refer an action Friday to members who will then poll about 30,000 companies on a series of questions.
Federal Judge Frank A. Picard, famed for a 1942 portal to portal ruling, must decide the amount owed in CIO United Pottery Workers’ overtime case from Mt. Clemens Michigan. The Supreme Court upheld overtime but remanded to set exact sums for workers ready before paid hours.

At Milwaukee the State Chamber announces its 17th annual meeting on January 13 featuring William Grede Milwaukee president of the Wisconsin Manufacturers Association Robert J Watt Washington AFL representative and William J Petersen Madison executive secretary of the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce as speakers on the labor management symposium.
The Supreme Court granted John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers a new appeal questioning the preliminary injunction and restraining orders from the soft coal strike case. The appeal broadens issues tied to a $10,000 fine on Lewis and a $3.5 million contempt fine on the union, with consolidated review set for January 14.
The Supreme Court threw out the convictions of two Jehovah's Witnesses for draft law violations. The rulings found lower courts denied proper trials by not hearing evidence on the defendants' contentions that their draft classifications were improper. Each man argued he should be classed as a minister of the gospel exempt from the draft.

Coroner E A Fischer of Dane county reports Mrs. George Bruger aged 64 from Birnamwood died yesterday from injuries suffered when she leaped or fell from a fourth floor hospital window in Madison.
Mrs William Hahn a prominent Brodhead club woman died Sunday morning after a week of illness. Born Antoinette Caroline Requartte in 1868 in Jefferson township she married William Hahn in 1892. Survivors include husband daughter and son with seven grandchildren. Funeral at 2:30 tomorrow at New Comer Funeral Home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Senator Wiley of Wisconsin urged the new Congress to quickly provide for a successor to govern if the president, cabinet, and members of Congress are killed by an atomic bomb or other disaster. He stressed the need to plan for any emergency in the atomic age.
Fourteen year old Ronald Berich sustained severe injuries when a Christmas tree device, described as a small copper tube with wires, detonated. The blast ripped off both thumbs and forefingers and caused internal injuries. his father Clarence Berich was lightly hurt. Authorities noted the device had been in the house for years with no one understanding its purpose.
A U S Navy ship left the port of Dairen after a verbal ultimatum from Soviet military officials threatening consequences if it did not depart within 20 minutes. The mission included attempting to land an American businessman and two journalists who were denied permission to land.
Jacob Kubly 67 of Monticello a Spanish American War veteran died at 10 last night in St. Clare hospital after a brief illness following a stroke. Born August 31 1879 in Switzerland he came to America in 1894 and worked 44 years for Illinois Central railroad earning a life pass after 40 years as section foreman. Survived by widow Barbara two sons Isaac Chicago and Francis Monticello two daughters Mrs Louis Zelinka Milton and Florence Kubly Monticello one sister and seven grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 p m at Zwingli Evangelical and Reformed church Rev A R Achtemeier officiating burial Highland cemetery. Body at Voegeli funeral home then church at noon.
Glenn B. Syse was reelected chairman of the Green county AAA at the annual meeting held Saturday in the local office. Fred Hahlen, Brodhead, was named vice chairman and W. C. Baumgartner, Albany, as third member. Mike Hoesly, New Glarus, and Jacob Hoesly, Albany, became first and second alternates respectively. Sixteen chairmen attended, one from each township group.
John son Ingewold, 40, a Dakorra farmer, was crushed to death when his tractor overturned and fell on him yesterday 15 miles south of here.
