Santa Claus Wins Christmas Seat in Congress Campaign

The Congressional Staff Club raised over its $1,000 goal as Santa Claus defeated Ebeneezer Scrooge in a week long Capitol Hill campaign. Claus led 679 to 346 with nine write ins and funds go to three Washington charities for needy kids. Scrooge said to consider appeals while staff teased future runs for higher office.

Badger Briefs Debate Registration and Mayor Race

State Rep. F. candeoetrenkaenatanio filed a minority report on universal voter registration as the Subcommittee on e needs to submit its recommendations to Gov. Patrick J. Lucey’s Voter Registration Task Force. A Milwaukee dispute centers on Daley type consolidation as Mayor Maier faces a potential bid from opponents. Edward E. Sushewitz urged a ward meeting to support a mayoral run, but the resolution failed without a second. Meanwhile Dr. David J. Carlson of the Milwaukee County Medical Society objected to price ceilings on physician fees, saying rigid controls could raise costs despite the commission’s proposed 28 percent increase.

Wisconsin considers Chicago rail link to Racine

Rep. Les Aspin said Wisconsin officials are asked to weigh a plan for Chicago & North Western rail service to Racine at about 60 000 dollars yearly. Amtrak left Racine without a local passenger link, aside from Sturtevant and Kenosha stops. Milwaukee leaders see devaluation as stabilizing international exchange rates and boosting Wisconsin commerce. Orville Mertz expects firmer profits abroad next year.

Poll indicators show abortion debate kept to doctors office

State Senate leader Sen. Ernest C. Keppler of Sheboygan says a poll in Ozaukee and Sheboygan counties finds voters feel abortion should be a doctor patient matter. But he doubts legislators will push to change Wisconsin abortion statute.

Reds recapture Plain of Jars in Laos battle

Communist forces retook the Plain of Jars in northern Laos after heavy three day assaults that left more than 500 Thai and Laotian defenders dead or wounded and cost four US planes. US F4 Phantoms supported Thai and Laotian troops as MIGs downed at least one Phantom. two American helicopters were shot down and several aircraft reported missing.

Gas explosion tears through Paris suburb building

A gas explosion hit a 12 story Argenteuil building near Paris, killing 10 and injuring 106 as fire crews evacuated a nearby school. Witnesses described walls blown down and cars hurled by the blast in the northwest suburb, where residents were shaken by the shock.
