Rescue Hopes Fade For Stranded Cattle
In Kennebec South Dakota work crews battled subzero temperatures to save 120 cattle stranded on an island in the Missouri River. Fire Chief Joe Heib said the cattle stood belly deep in water and refused to swim through a frozen ice alley as rescuers chopped and blasted the ice. The beasts had wandered onto a sandbar and may have to be shot to avoid drowning or freezing.

Outagamie County Coroner reports Florence Kilsdonk, 28, stabbed nine times in the neck and chest with a slashed wrist. Her husband Marvin found her body in the kitchen at 2:30 p.m. with their two month old son Jeffrey unharmed on a table. The victim had been making candy and was dead about eight hours.
