High school students begin Christmas recess at noon Friday and return to the new School for shortened classes January 5. Elementary pupils also start recess Friday and resume January 5. An auditorium assembly at 8 08 a m tomorrow features a drama club play Twas The Fight Before Christmas with listed cast and crew.
A special school district meeting is planned for Monday January 12 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium to act on a proposal to provide bus transport for Monroe students attending the new high school. The plan followed a library meeting where nearly 50 parents debated routes and distances with state aid details and district rules noted by Supt. Huenink.
Governor Vernon Thomson appoints Mrs. Samuel N. Pickard of Neenah to the University of Wisconsin board of visitors. The announcement marks a new addition to the university governance group.
City Council approved buying amber flasher signals from a Moline firm for 397.80 to designate a 15 mph zone near North school on 11th Street Highway 1181. Lights will flash only when children arrive or leave, with potential second unit on 20th Avenue near St. Victor's school if successful.
John T. Hauser 77 retired farmer and tavern operator died at 7 10 am at St Clare hospital where he had been a patient a week. He lived at 1024 Seventh Avenue since 1920 and was active in the Moose Lodge Fire Department and Wisconsin Raccoon and Fox Hunters Association. He was born October 2 1881 in New Glarus Township and married Rose Roth May 19 1906 in Monroe. He leaves wife daughter granddaughter two brothers three sisters and several in laws. Services 1 30 pm Friday Shriner Neush wander funeral home Rev Paul H Olm will officiate burial Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call after noon tomorrow.
A B47 bomber carrying four crew members crashed into Tampa Bay near St. Petersburg Florida Tuesday night after veering from a residential area. The explosive impact left no survivors and one body was recovered from the wreckage.
Aldermen authorized purchase of a $995 police radio console and a $589.50 mobile unit for the second patrol car. Pay raises were approved for Fire Chief Josef J. Benkert from $300 to $600 and for two assistant chiefs and the city sealer. The council also extended New Year’s Eve tavern hours and handled various contracts, licenses, and transfers.
An anonymous caller told the city switchboard operator that a bomb was in a city school prompting evacuations at both the Chippewa County high and elementary schools. About 425 students attend the high school and 250 the elementary, many of whom were outside during the noon hour.
At Vandenberg Air Force Base the first ballistic missile launch under combat conditions sent a Thor cone across the Pacific. The 50-ton missile rose 300 miles, fired with an 11 man crew, reaching 10 000 mph before fuel tanks burned away. A second Thor launch occurred from Cape Canaveral, marking a dual coast test.
The council lacked a quorum to approve the Wisconsin Power and Light Co street lighting contract for 1959. Herman L. Schindler proposed a $21,000 advance payment. Aldermen LaVerne E. Deal and G. Fred Galli were unavailable. Mayor Schiller barred stockholders from voting, excluding Nathan F. Burgy. Meeting adjourned to January 6.
The cold wave melted under a December sun and temperatures rose to 31 above zero late yesterday. A quick drop to 8 above came by morning, then 17 above by afternoon. Gen Lauris Norstad urged NATO foreign ministers to speed up missile rearmament amid Soviet threats. He called for intermediate range American missiles on European bases and 30 divisions plus 100 missile battalions by 1963. France delays hinder progress. Britain has accepted missiles.
The Associated Press reports Pope John XXIII named Most Rev. John F Dear den of Pittsburgh to head the Detroit archdiocese. He will succeed Cardinal Mooney. Dearden, 51, has led Pittsburgh since 1948 and was bishop since 1950. Also named archbishop of Milwaukee was William E Cousins of Peoria, 56, succeeding Archbishop Mey er.
A special House committee recommends refusing to seat Dale Alford, who beat Rep. Brooks Hays in a write in race over school integration. The panel notes irregularities in campaign spending and indicates two Southerners opposed the recommendation. Amis Gutheridge filed a protest as the matter moves toward opening day January 7.
Industrial Combustion Inc Monroe based industry signs a three year contract with the International Association of Machinists Local 1096 at Freeport effective December 8. The deal covers 31 of 50 employees with 15 job classifications and awaits NLRB supervised ratification by local members. An IAM special representative signed for the union. A plant local is planned and a vote earlier showed 17 to 9 in favor.
New York trading pushed indices to a fresh high early afternoon as several leaders posted fractional gains. Steel, mail order retail, electronics, utilities, rails and oils led the advance while many issues fell. U.S. government bonds remained steady.
Peiping radio announced Mao Zedong will step down as president while remaining party chairman. Rumors point to Marshal Zhu De as a potential successor, with public doubt about the commune system and its effect on individual freedom. The Communist Central Committee stressed Mao’s voluntary move, as the People’s Congress nears the next month to elect the new government chief.
