The Ford strike settlement helped lift personal income to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1 417.8 billion in November, a 1.1 percent rise from October. Per capita income reached 6 573, up 8.3 percent from a year earlier as inflation ran about 5 percent.
President-elect Carter will nominate Rep. Andrew Young as U N ambassador and Charles Schultze as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers. He also favors Joseph Califano for head of the Health, Education and Welfare Department and Robert Bergland for secretary of Agriculture.
Gary Gilmore's lawyer weighs a U S District Court order to block stripped-down cell confinement ahead of the January 17 execution. Officials say the punishment follows prison rules violations while foes push to halt the death date.
A Chicago bound Amtrak Zephyr plunged 35 feet down an embankment just before 3 a.m. injuring at least 46 with no fatalities. The 111 car train had about 180 aboard and two sleeping cars and multiple coaches toppled. Passengers escaped via windows with sledgehammers. Greg J. Gee was the most seriously hurt and listed in serious condition.
Madison reports farmers and banks in the Evansville Farmers Grain Exchange failure received checks of 3 cents on losses. The $63,489 total goes to 100 farmers and two banks from state bond proceeds held by the Agriculture Department. Ben Green, exchange operator, died November 15 after pleading guilty to fraud.
