The Wisconsin Exposition Council says State Fair Park in West Allis should close after the 1971 fair and keep expenses to a minimum. The site is burdened by financial problems and aging structures. estimates put the cost at about 11 million dollars to extend its life for 20 years.
President Nguyen Van Thieu expressed approval of President Nixon's troop withdrawal plan and said South Vietnam's forces will take a larger role. North Vietnam denounced the move as meaningless and urged complete withdrawal of all American troops. In Chicago, a fire caused $15,000 damage at Englewood High School and 17 people were arrested as six area schools were disrupted.
Judge Doyle ruled that the seizure of items from Myron Amato's bookstore on October 16 December 5 and December 10 was improper. The court found the prior seizure violated Amato's First Amendment rights as the materials were not adjudged obscene before removal.
Federal Judge James E. Doyle held that denial of anti war advertisements by the University of Wisconsin Whitewater campus paper The Royal Purple violated free speech rights. Plaintiffs Rev Leonard R Schramach Jack K Lee and Gordon Riley claimed they were told such ads violated paper policy.
Hialeah Florida AP report states Santa Claus Larry Grimm 59 a shopping center Santa was reprimanded by the Palm Springs Mile Merchants Association for telling children that Santa does not bring guns to good little boys. Grimm notes several parents approved last year but this year some complained. He recalls a prior reprimand for asking children to pray for the safe return of those daddies away this Christmas.
Five men cited after a March of Dimes stay party at Rock Springs in January had gambling charges dropped on a technicality. County Judge Robert Pfiffner ruled the Sauk County District Attorney’s office failed to meet identification requisites. state agents had alleged go go girls gambling and obscene films at the party.
Monroe Woman's Club members announce need for cookies jams and jellies for the Christmas Stocking project with 48 elderly persons and 18 families on the list. Donations by Dec 19 may be left at Mrs Sherman Hodgson's home or arranged for pickup. Lions Club aid and quilt donations are requested.
Mrs Mae P Hood Monroe known as Granny dies at 96 in Wahiawa Hawaii helping care for her daughter. Born Mae Louise Puffer in Milwaukee she lived in Monroe since infancy. She married Jay Hood in 1897 and was active in St Andrews Episcopal Church and Order of the Eastern Star. Survived by two daughters three grandsons and four great grandchildren. Services set for Dec 17 at The Stnessy Funeral Home. Burial Greenwood Cemetery.
President Nixon announced a third withdrawal of 50,000 U.S. troops from South Vietnam, to be completed by April 15, longer than prior cuts. He warned of strong measures if increased enemy action endangers remaining forces, citing cautious optimism from observers and leaders in Viet Nam.
Whitewater State University president William Carter announced warrants were being sought against 15 students after a brawl erupted when 20 to 25 black students entered the Phi Chi Epsilon fraternity house on Main Street. The incident followed an intramural basketball game and left injuries to fire crews and property damage.
Walter Vandermeer, 12, reported as New York City’s youngest heroin death. The boy, an alcoholic by ten and a heroin user at eleven, was found dead in a Harlem tenement bathroom after an apparent injection. Doctor Michael Baden described peer pressure and widespread heroin use among youths.
