Wisconsin Faces Severe Cold With Subzero Record Lows

County Board Hours Levy Swap For District No 1
County board approved paying 1328 to Joint School District No 1 in lieu of taxes on the county hospital to reimburse Monroe Township for funds paid toward its school levy. The decision passed 20 to 14 amid objections that the amount is double the township’s prior levy and that other county establishments pay no taxes. Glen Benkett said the increase reflects educating district residents from absorbed District No 5 under the new system. The board also named Mrs Virginia M Moe full time nurse at the county hospital at 370 monthly. A resolution clarified highway committee duties and the highway commissioner’s role. Ben Cleveland will continue with welfare and highway committees until April reorganization following his resignation from welfare. The two committees may conflict. The board authorized Hoyt C Barney Henry Disch and Carl Schumacher to continue working for the highway dept until Dec 1962, part time for emergencies due to their skills. Four supervisors urged increasing highway committee membership from three to five to handle 62 percent of the county budget. The four named were Mathew F Eraser Robert F Cashman Fitz Stanley W Knight and Gerald Swiggum. Acting county Civil Defense director Charles B Marvin said he completed a manual and noted a lag in county interest with no federal funds until a definite CD plan is submitted.

William Ayers of Gratiot Dies After Illness
William H Ayers 72 longtime Gratiot resident and former Lafayette County Board of Supervisors chairman died in a Madison hospital after a short illness. He chaired the board 1937 to 1950 and ran a Gratiot funeral home for 40 years before selling it. Surviving are his wife three sons a brother three sisters and 11 grandchildren. Services set for 10 a m Friday at St Joseph church Gratiot with calls at O Flaherty funeral home and Ayers residence. Rosary at 8 p m tomorrow.

Oakley School Adds Building and Upgrades
An addition is under construction at Oakley rural school in Spring Grove Township. A new heating system, drilled well, and updated water system are planned. Oakley district formed 1840 with parts of Spring Grove and Jefferson Townships. The first building stood near the Montefelt family home. current schoolhouse followed. Washington reported that the Kennedy administration may cut eight to ten Army National Guard and Reserve divisions to reshuffle manpower. Strong divisions would stay on the rolls while weaker units are dropped, possibly reducing drill pay totals.
