Ashland Sheriff Seeks Killer After Deputy Slaying
Ashland County Sheriff Joseph Croteau said authorities seek a mentally unbalanced suspect in the slaying of deputy Walter Gaik 58 of Ashland. Gaik was found dead in his squad car after a shotgun blast through the windshield near Odanah on the Bad River Indian Reservation. The scene showed a foxhole in snow with two tin cans and a shotgun propped in a tree to target anyone driving through.

Policeman in Critical Condition After Monroe Crash
Monroe Police Officer Richard Busch remained in critical condition in St. Clare Hospital ICU after a crash on Highway 11 west of Monroe. His car collided with a truck driven by Taryn Nair en route to Monroe High School. Nair reportedly lost control 3.3 miles west of Monroe at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Orbital injuries and possible concussion were reported, with X-rays pending.

Dr. Hayes F. Cunningham, 78, of 2264 16th St Monroe, a longtime dentist, died at 8:50 a.m. Thursday Dec 10 at St. Clare Hospital after a severe stroke. A Richland Center native born Dec 1, 1892, he retired Jan 1, 1968 after 50 years in practice and served in many civic and fraternal roles including Kiwanis, Masons, Eastern Star, Elks, Moose, Knights of Pythias, and Green County Red Cross disaster relief. Survived by widow Grace. son Donald H. brother Donald S. sister Margaret. and grandson Scott. Funeral arrangements by Shriner Neushwander.
