Robbery Attempt Ends Without Loot at Portage County Bank

A man entered the Portage County Bank in Almond, displayed a handgun and ordered a teller to fill a gray duffle bag. The teller complied as the bank vice president appeared, causing the robber to flee with no money. In another item, a judge will decide if Mary Jo Kopechne’s body will be exhumed for autopsy.

Hunger strike on death row at San Quentin nears two weeks

Sirhan Bishara Sirhan inching into day 12 of a hunger strike at San Quentin where he is held on death row for the RFK assassination. His Pasadena mother Mary Sirhan plans to visit to try to persuade him to eat. She says she will go see her son and hopes to convince him to resume meals.

About 15 to 20 area high school journalists attended a Monroe Clinic panel on The relationship Between Smoking and Lung Cancer. Moderator Dr Bill L Maddix and panelists Dr Eugene Eckstam and Dr Meir Qureshi cited that smokers face nine times higher lung cancer risk and described symptoms, diagnosis methods, and the claim that stopping smoking is the best cure.

Hospital expansion progresses ahead of schedule in Monroe

Construction on the $72 million St. Clare Hospital addition, overseen by C H Gibson of Schmidt Garden Erikson, is 12 days ahead of earlier estimates as rock excavation slows progress on the heating plant. About 50 workers from J P Cullen Co. labor daily, with winter work continuing. Completion remains slated for December 1971, and temporary parking for 230 cars is planned this winter with three more lots for doctors and emergency vehicles. Total cost stands at $7,306,777 funded partly by a Friends of St. Clare campaign. donors are urged to complete pledges by January 1 to maximize tax benefits.

Kaskey Outlines Welfare Programs in Green County

Monroe Lions Club heard Green County Social Services Director Ray Kaskey review six welfare programs. Old Age aid serves 126, Dependent Children 12–20, Disabled 30, Blind 4, General Relief supports three, and Unwed Mothers 12. Child Welfare totals about 200, with 13 in foster care and two in institutions.
