Authorities rounded up about 40 employes and patrons from taverns and print shops in a crackdown on a roughly 2 million dollar yearly betting operation. District Attorney Ralph Binger of Douglas County did not yet reveal charges.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court canceled the firing of Jane Reinke, a 39 year old counselor at the Oregon School for Girls, ruling there was not adequate evidence she was so violent as to deserve termination. Reinke claimed the 15 year old prisoner framed her over a transfer of a companion to another institution.
Milwaukee Mayor Henry Mai proposes a special plan to resolve the labor dispute with the police union. The panel would include union reps, Chief Harold Breier, two attorneys, and a fact finder to negotiate department rules previously decided by one man. Jerome Dudzik of PPPA calls the idea interesting but doubts its feasibility.
The Negro minority at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point offered to help enroll other Black students and improve the college's image as white oriented. President Lee S. Dreyfus cited the Black Student Coalition in a letter to faculty. Negro students proposed sending members to their home high schools on a recruitment mission.
A Milwaukee based three-judge U.S. District Court panel ruled portions of Wisconsin abortion law unconstitutional and refused to allow the state to close an abortion clinic in Madison. The decision keeps the Madison clinic open pending further legal action.

Peterson was elected president Wednesday of the National Young Cooperators of the National Milk Producers Federation at its 55th annual convention in Bal Harbour Florida. He and his wife Carol joined seven couples from AMPI Mid-States Region. total attendees exceeded 2 000 milk producers and industry leaders. Peterson previously served as YC secretary in 1970 and sits on AMPI Mid-States Region board. Gerald Mullen of Gratiot Wisconsin was named regional vice president for the Midwest region.
Washington reports the November unemployment rate at 6.0 percent with total employment rising to a record 80 million. Job seekers reach 4.8 million while teens face 17.0 percent unemployment. adults show modest increases and Vietnam veterans back at 8.2 percent. Wholesale prices climb 0.1 percent to 114.5.

Air pirates seized a Pakistan International Airlines plane en route from London to Pakistan at Orly Airport and demanded 20 tons of medicine for Bengali refugees. After five hours, two men with Red Cross armbands unloaded medicine from a pickup and into the jet as seven passengers exited. A supply convoy carrying penicillin and anticholera vaccine was dispatched to the airport.
