City Council approves a 75 foot aerial ladder fire truck for about $32,760 to be delivered in 12 to 15 months and a 1,000 gallon pumper for roughly $20,000 to arrive next summer. County pays $7,500 toward the aerial ladder to aid firefighting at Green County home.
Mrs. Margaret Hardyman former Monroe resident aged 72 died at 9 45 p m at her daughter’s home near Orangeville after a prolonged diabetes illness and a stroke. Born December 18 1878 in Washington Township she married Matthias Hardyman January 18 1898 and lived in several Wisconsin towns. Survived by a daughter a son six brothers a sister three grandchildren and a great grandchild. Funeral services at Shriner Neushwander and St Victor s Church with burial in Calvary cemetery follow a rosary at the funeral home.
Edmund D. Denison, 80, retired teacher and school administrator, died at his Lake Geneva home. He served as superintendent of schools from 1922 to 1931 before resigning to take a similar post in Clinton.
Edison E. Bartrum of Hoytville Ohio displayed three Chester White pigs named grand champion pen of barrows. Purdue University took reserve grand with three Poland Chinas around 2200 pounds. Ohio State University owned Leadre 11, a roan 1100 pound shorthorn named grand champion steer, judged by A D Weber from Kansas State. Reserve steer Ike, a 1000 pound Hereford senior calf, belongs to John and Myron Minish of Dysart Iowa.
The ice rink opens today under Kenneth Baker recreation director with Ronald Leights and Thomas Hyland assisting. Hours are weekdays 4 to 5 30 pm, Saturdays 1 to 5 pm, Sundays 1 30 to 5 pm, plus weekday evenings 7 to 9 30 pm and Sunday 7 to 9 pm with floodlights.

Prices for State brand Swiss cheese fell by two cents while B dropped one cent. C grade and grinders unchanged. New prices: State brand 50 cents, B 48, C 46, grinders 43. Heavy State brand stock due to competition from imported cheese. Law requires eight weeks shelf holding after make. Wisconsin domestic market weak to steady with ample offerings and light demand. State prices in Madison and assorted cheese types also show thin demand and subdued selling values.
The University of Wisconsin topped the intercollegiate meat judging contest at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. Duane Miller of Oregon Wisconsin earned top individual honors, with Justin Juozaitis of Madison second and Charles Eckels of Hartford third. Wisconsin's team totaled 2,753 points, ahead of Kentucky 2,695 and Ohio 2,668. The Badger squad excelled in beef grading and judging, pork and lamb events.
Theodore Friedlander Sr. chairman of the Phoenix Hosiery Co. died of a heart ailment in Milwaukee. He led the firm as vice and general manager from 1935 to 1948 and then became president before his passing.
Senator Taft assailed President-elect Eisenhower’s choice of Martin Durkin to head labor affairs, labeling him a union official and a Democrat who opposed Eisenhower while urging repeal of the Taft Hartley act. Taft’s stance signals potential clashes as he prepares to chair the Senate Labor Committee in January.
A federal grand jury reports the State Department gave clean bills of health to disloyal officials linked to the United Nations staff. Gratiot Charles Graham of Gratiot was found guilty of negligent homicide by a Lafayette County Circuit Court jury in Darlington after a six hour deliberation. He faces sentencing by Judge Arthur Kopp at 9 am tomorrow. Graham is free on bond. The death of Ole Anderson, 66, occurred when Graham's car rolled over on Highway 23 about five miles south of Darlington on April 3. A prior trial in June ended without a verdict.
U S press reports indicate Chicago Sun-Times reporter Brennan faced a second indictment for posing as a government official to obtain a secret Senate Crime Investigation transcript. The two counts allege false impersonation and obtaining Gilbert testimony, valued at about fifteen dollars, from Alderson Reporting. Gilbert, chief county investigator and Democratic candidate, testified in secret before the committee. The Sun-Times published his testimony on November second, five days before Gilbert’s decisive election loss.
Prague Radio reports the execution of Rudolf Slansky and ten other Czechoslovak Communist leaders for treason after a purge trial. The defendants, including Valdo Clementis and Bedrich Geminder, confessed to leading a Zionist Trotskyite plot to overthrow the pro Moscow government.
Henderson Kentucky report says a barge loaded with about 200 new automobiles sank on the Ohio River near Henderson Islands. The cars were valued at about 2000 dollars each. The towboat and another barge escaped. last winter a similar loss occurred near Gol City with 150 cars.
In Fairfield California Navy Ensign Marvin S. Cohn of Portland Oregon was cited for speeding on November 4 while awaiting shipment to Korea. A letter to Justice of the Peace Georgia Crowley stated he would be unable to appear as his ship sailed for Korean waters. The court later received a note marked addressee deceased claiming Cohn was killed in a jet crash aboard the USS Philippine Sea on November 18 during training maneuvers. His sister in San Francisco confirmed the death.
Adlai Stevenson and Harry S. Truman meet in the White House to discuss the Democratic party's past and future. Stevenson, Illinois governor and former presidential candidate, flew from Atlantic City after memorial services for CIO President Philip Murray. The talks aim to define Stevenson's role, with party leader Stephen A. Mitchell urging him to continue as standard-bearer. They will dine with Mrs. Truman and begin discussions on revitalizing the party.
College officials from more than 20 Midwest universities will attend Monroe's annual College Night. Parents and Green County high school students will attend two sessions starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. with general sessions and individual conferences to follow.
Mrs. Dagny A. Quisling 83 widow of the founder of Madison's Quisling Clinic died of a heart ailment. She was found dead in her apartment after apparently going to a telephone for help. A skilled Hardanger violinist, she played at folk gatherings across the country. Her sons Rolf and others lead the Quisling medical center.
