Farmers and dairy plant operators will meet to elect officers and draw up corporation papers and those interested in joining the cooperative are invited. The association plans a fulltime field man to visit farms and plants to advise on milk quality. E. O. Baker county agent A. J. Repvin county dairy inspector and Charles A. Buck assistant county agent will attend.
Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita told a Mutual Broadcasting System correspondent in Manila that he was lucky at Singapore, claiming British forces were large but failed to deploy heavy artillery. He said his forces numbered 40,000 to 50,000 and that luck spared them from annihilation. He contrasted offensive ease with defense after battles in Malaya and the Philippines.
The Agriculture Department says displaced farm labor will need a year to rejoin fields. In 1945 the U S used 109 000 foreign workers and 122 000 war prisoners. no prisoners will be available again. The House approved 14 million dollars to hire about 48 000 foreign workers but the plan was cut from the bill. Domestic labor advocates question foreign hiring costs versus using local workers.
President Truman asked Congress to create a fact finding board to advise on labor conflicts in key industries and to ban strikes or lockouts during federal review.
