LANCASTER Two prisoners escaped Sunday night through a screen covered window in Grant County jail. Within an hour authorities captured them, Jack Oates 21 Platteville and Robert Cohoe 25 Lancaster. Oates found shivering in the jail yard and Cohoe picked up on a highway two miles outside town. The jail’s heavy steel screen likely prevented bars on outside windows.

Wells building to become recreation center site

Green County sheriff's deputies could not locate the alleged black bear after Mrs. Norman Wells and her son Billy reported a sighting Saturday near Highway 11 two miles west of Monroe. The witnesses described a four legged animal as large as a man when standing on two legs, with previous sightings near Zanders Lake earlier in the year. The pheasant hunt in Green County ended yesterday with hundreds of hunters in the area.
