NEW YORK The stock market rose and saw increased trading activity this afternoon. Early gains by Bethlehem and Chrysler narrowed to about one point as other names advanced including Montgomery Ward United Airlines Firestone Atlantic Coast Line and Lion Oil. Republic Youngstown and U S Steel posted gains along with Boeing Douglas Kennecott Anaconda Allied Chemical Union Carbide and DuPont. Phelps Dodge International Nickel and Air Reduction fell back. Rail issues New York Central Baltimore and Ohio Southern Pacific Pennsylvania and Chesapeake and Ohio rose slightly.
