Koenig Refutes Airport Crisis at Monroe Council

At the Monroe City Council meeting, attorney L A Koenig rebutted claims of an emergency surrounding the private airport leased by Arthur E Bartlett. He said Bartlett will not close the airport when the Oct 1 lease ends if back rent of 1000 is paid, noting no emergency exists. The council discussed a 2000 foot secondary runway funded by federal state and local sources and planned for a fall start, with T K Jordan of the State Aeronautics Commission meeting city officials soon.

Former Gov Simpson Wins Wyoming Senate Nomination

In Cheyenne Milward L Simpson age 65 Cody attorney staged a political comeback and won the Republican nomination for the U S Senate in Wyoming. His opponent Kenny Sailors Jackson Hole rancher and former basketball star conceded. In November Simpson will face Democratic Senator Joe Hickey who was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Monroe H S Appoints New Junior High Principal

Monroe welcomes Gordon G. Kniskern as the new junior high principal starting opening day next Thursday. Kniskern previously served as supervising principal at the Clystick Consolidated district and holds degrees from Northern Illinois University and the University of Wisconsin. He served in the army and Air Force Reserve and has a strong athletic background in basketball baseball and football.

Lucey Questions Plans for Milwaukee Debate Forum

Democratic state leader Patrick Lucey criticized the Milwaukee Public Affairs Forum for a proposed Sept. 27 debate between Governor candidate John Reynolds and the Republican winner. He called the carnival atmosphere unacceptable and said Reynolds has not approved the forum’s ground rules or setting, raising concerns about final arrangements.

Mayor Evans announced three public hearings for Sept 4. One covers annexing 3.36 acres in Monroe Township owned by the city including a well and incinerator building. Bank Raid Links to Highwaymen in Mail Truck Heist

Boston reports link between a Lynn bank robbery gang and the trio who stole a record 1.5 million from a U. S. mail truck last week. Capt. Robert Pawlowski an 11 year old boy in Milwaukee died after allegedly hanging himself in a tree house on Tuesday following a joking remark to two friends that he would hang himself. Police say the death appears accidental though the comment preceded the incident.

Stewart Kingston Dies from Stroke At 55

Stewart F Kingston 55 longtime Wisconsin Power and Light salesman died at St Clare hospital after a brain hemorrhage. He served 33 years with the utility in Madison Fond du Lac and Monroe districts and was active in St Andrews Episcopal church Lions Club Boy Scouts Masonic bodies and DeMolay. He leaves a widow daughter Suzenne two granddaughters and his Madison and Rockford born family. Funeral services set for Friday at St Andrews Madison with Masonic rites.

Two 7 Year Old Girls Trapped by Faulty Lock Found Safe

Alexandria authorities report two missing girls Maria Teresa Moreley and Rita Ohlgren were found unharmed late Tuesday in a vacant second floor apartment after being trapped by a defective lock since Sunday. FBI agents located the girls who had survived on water and waited out the ordeal in a windowless bathroom. The search drew about 600 volunteers, police, Marines and helicopters as families rejoiced at reunions with the girls and parents.
