Dr. L. H. Allen of Albany raises giant dahlias, with a 16 inch bloom among about 30 named varieties. He and wife tend a showplace garden, store roots for winter, inspect for spoilage, and prepare for frost by digging roots before freeze nights.
The annual Fun Day parade winds through the square and toward Recreation Park. Virginia Kreuss leads Monroe High pep band with baton twirlers as kids and adults enjoy floats bicycles pets and playful mischief.
Arlene Pick of Green County travels to the Wisconsin state fair with county home agent Merrys Richert to vie for the title Queen of Dairyland. Judging occurs at a 6 o'clock banquet at the Plankinton hotel Milwaukee with the royalty announced the next day.
Commander Robert D. Schindler of the U S Navy was guest speaker at Kiwanis luncheons this moon at the Monroe hotel. He discussed Why a Dentist in the Navy. Dr L A Moore and Rev Paul C Kehle reported briefly on the state Kiwanis convention at Marinette.
Judge E Paul Mason granted an absolute divorce to Christian A Dresch of Baltimore while dismissing Jeanne I Dresch's suit. She argued the Wisconsin farmhouse lacked central heating and water, but the judge said the husband was the aggrieved party for leaving city life.
An eyewitness near Bled described American made fighter planes over the frontier after two C-47 transports were shot down. He heard explosions but saw no parachutes. reports note Yugoslav use of Russian Stormoviks and American C-47s in the region amid postwar tensions.
The OPA raises coal and orange ceilings and signals meat prices will return to June 30 levels when controls resume Sept. 9. Lamb prices are set to average at least five cents higher per pound, due to the subsidy decision not to revive lamb aid. Meat subsidies for cattle and hogs will resume at the June 29 rate, as authorized by the price decontrol board.
A 15-year-old Monroe boy, placed on probation July 31 after pleading guilty to stealing a car, was ordered to the Wisconsin Industrial School for Boys at Waukesha for violation of probation. He was arrested July 29 in Freeport with another youth for taking a car from Forrest L. Kubly of Juda at Recreation Park. He will remain at Waukesha until age 21 unless paroled or discharged. He had earlier violated probation and was returned to Monroe from Dubuque by the Green County sheriff's department.
Monroe post office received terminal leave pay forms for enlisted men. Green County service office asks ex-Glis to delay filing until discharge documents arrive. Veterans must submit an original or certified copy of discharge with their claim for unused leave pay.
AP dispatches report a tentative understanding reached between the national maritime union negotiators and Standard Oil Co of Indiana, signaling possible settlement of the eight day old Great Lakes shipping strike. Also reports deny Allied Italy to Palestine troop redeployment claims as false.
Washington D. C. Wyatt outlined a housing campaign shift toward materials for residences, proposing a 30 to 50 percent cut in nonresidential building. He pledged sweeping actions this month to finish thousands of homes started this year and accelerate new dwellings, amid reports only 40,000 of 331,000 planned permanent dwellings were completed. Roosevelt Jr. criticized government building trends as diverting resources from homes.
Monticello public schools will begin Monday September 2. High school staff includes Principal H A Becker and teachers John Richards VU G Hill Mary Margaret Schnurr Ther Wiseman and John Ponyiscanyi. Grade teachers are Lora Dick Ruth Zentner and Hazel Kundert. Edmund Dooley replaces Emil Blum as janitor. School board members are Dr J M Harden president J W Barlow clerk and Dr William V Baebler treasurer.
Milwaukee AP report notes Mayor Dominic Olejniczak of Green Bay won the chicken-picking contest at the Wisconsin state fair in an event that showcased poultry day. Mayors Francis Wendt Racine W. H. Eldridge Plymouth and Arnold Klientz West Allis trailed in the field with Olejniczak claiming victory in 37 seconds.
Mrs Ralph Kundert and Mrs E N Churchill depart to attend the fourth annual Wisconsin historical society convention in Prairie du Chien. Misses Lillian Gempeler Anna Blum and Clara Zum Brunnen miss the trip. Dr Clifford Lord new museum director will speak at the banquet at Campion College with a style revue From Buckskins to Bobby Socks and a tour of Villa Louis grounds planned for Saturday.
The Green County Republican committee plans mail convening this year with precinct representatives voting for county chairman and secretary by postcard. Republican appointments include Schrepfer Fritz Scherer Zeller Ludwig Kaeser Ross Evenson to fill vacancies. Democratic chair Roy McBride says a meeting will be held next week and vacancies in 17 precincts will be filled soon.
Washington agri department reports a record corn crop estimate of 442,202,000 bushels based on Aug 15 conditions, up from Aug 1 projections of 3,496,820,000 and the previous record of 3,203,310,000 harvested in 1945. Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota show the largest state contributions in the Aug 15 and Aug 1 estimates.
