Reports from Manila and Tokyo describe Japan teetering toward internal collapse as war losses, food shortages, and economic ruin press the nation. Officials warn Allied forces may intervene if local authorities fail, while calls for calm and discipline echo across broadcasts.
In Manila General MacArthur announced formal surrender of Japan within 10 days subject to weather delays. emissaries fly to Tokyo with detailed occupation guidance while Tokyo radio notes separate surrender demands from Chungking and Communist leaders.
Rural schools prepare for opening either August 27 or September 1 as officials decide. Teachers have spent two weeks readying classrooms and many schools received summer improvements including painting and new furnishings. Teachers will meet county officials at the Green County Institute here Friday.
Washington Bureau reports America enters peace week with big Christmas sales hopes and continued wartime price controls where needed. OPA targets lower clothing prices by Christmas while shelves fill with low and medium priced items. Warns on war bonds and gradual end of lend lease. Truman orders swift peacetime transition while keeping labor board should conflicts arise. several wartime agencies to end as normal departments take over.
Amid sultry weather Monroe residents and nationwide observers attended church services at a call for peace after years of war. Clergy urged prayer in peacetime and wartime as music highlighted the observance with performances from several churches.
Washington reports farm implement and industrial tires will be free of rationing after midnight though truck and passenger car tires stay on the list. WPB says ample supplies exist, including tractor tires, easing controls for farmers and manufacturers. Moscow notes major Manchurian resistance ends as over 100000 Japanese surrender to the Red Army with Mukden Hsin King and Kirin garrisons ready to fall upon main forces.
The Badger ordnance plant, facing canceled war department munitions contracts, will close after production drops 98 percent under last week’s order. The facility housed about 6,000 workers and plans call for 300 to 400 layoffs daily upon closing. Green County, with 23 146 residents, lists eight plant employees, all from New Glarus. Other nearby counties will feel impact as well.
Six people died in Wisconsin over the weekend in drownings and crashes. Victims include Carolyn Bartel and Peter Bartel in Lake Denoon, Madison girl Chrlyne Smith, Robert Stocke of Elm Grove, LeBlanc child from Boyne City Michigan, and Henry Kubal of Milwaukee. The Bartels drowned after a boy leapt into Lake Dencon to rescue the other. Stocke, a sailor, died when his car overturned near Oconomowoc. LeBlanc’s son died after falling into a ship hold on the W E Fitzgerald en route to Sheboygan. Kubal was crushed by an elevator while cleaning its pit. Smith drowned in Lake Wingra. Portell died from a diving accident at Devil’s Lake near Baraboo. Nationwide traffic toll rose as gas rationing ended with a 54 total for the weekend and state tallies show Wisconsin at one death.
Green county and Monroe begin reconversion as peace nears. Youths leave farms for town jobs, farmers face labor and housing strains, Warsburg Battery keeps peacetime contracts, Western Union resumes greetings, rationing loosens hints with possible cheese relaxations.
Three minor traffic accidents were logged by police in Monroe over the weekend with no injuries. John Mueller, 2111 15th Avenue, in a 1936 Ford sedan. Jacob Schulthess, 1024 West Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, in a 1938 Chevrolet sedan. Alfred Branchi, Albany Route 1, in a 1939 Chevrolet sedan, collided at the intersection of 17th Street and 13th Avenue. David Ernest Seeholzer, 14 Monroe Route 4, in his father’s 1940 Chrysler, collided with Mrs. Harold Scherer near the north end of the herringbone parking zone at the northwest corner of the square.
The prosecution plans to introduce testimony from Nazi leaders including Goering, Ribbentrop, and Rosenberg against Vidkun Quisling as he goes on trial for treason. Schodt announced Allied and Norwegian officials are recording German witnesses in Berlin, detailing wartime Norwegian plans and Quisling’s meetings with Hitler. He described Quisling as a patriot and prophet who claimed Bolshevism as the central enemy and demanded rehabilitation for past harms.
Lt Gen Jonathan Wainwright, liberated from a Japanese prison camp, is due in Chungking where he may witness surrender events. Allied air and sea forces will evacuate internees with no discrimination, as large numbers remain in Mukden Shanghai Hainan Island Hong Kong Peiping Korea Formosa Indo China and Japanese home islands.
Monroe may see thunder showers tonight and tomorrow morning after a hot weekend with 87 degrees. Cooler conditions expected as farmers watch oats harvest, corn, and hay. light showers hoped to assist crops. Wisconsin crop report predicts near record oat yield and high overall production despite labor and weather issues.
A Ray mond Wong car overturned at 11:05 am west of Ralph Stautifacher farm on highway 11 and 81 injuring two passengers Mrs Wong and Miss Charlotte Fancher. The driver Mr Wong from Janesville lost control after a left front tire blew out. Mrs Wong, Mrs Fancher, and an 8 month old child were aboard. Mrs Wong sustained a right hand injury while Miss Fancher had a cut and bruise to the left shoulder. The auto was heavily damaged.
