Yugoslav Woman Freed From Bondage In United States
President Eisenhower signed a relief bill granting permanent residence to Stajkan Petrovic a 48 year old Serb woman who had lived in bondage as a domestic servant in New York and other places for nearly five years. Sponsored by Senator Hendrickson the measure followed reports from Rev D J Shoukletovich of the Serbian cathedral in New York. The woman known as Stajka endured years of confinement and shuttling between families and was kept from church and social contact. She sought refuge at a Yugoslav Consulate and later found shelter through the Serbian cathedral. Her name and shelter location are kept secret to protect her from Communist reprisal.
