Multiple Auto Crashes In County Injure Three
A weekend series of motor vehicle accidents in the county left three people injured. Oscar Thierstein, 67, Monroe, was hospitalized with a bruised head and wrist after his car hit a bridge railing and rolled over near Browntown on Highway 11. Mrs. Leroy Erickson, 44, Blanchardville, and Carol Erickson, 18, were treated for injuries following a collision involving a car, a truck, and a horse and buggy near Strahm’s Corners on Highway 39. A third incident near Browntown injured Susan J. Johnson, Darlington, and damaged 250 feet of corn. Other crashes caused vehicle damage and minor injuries, with police reporting no serious harm in several Monroe city accidents.

Seven Killed in Wisconsin Car Crash Involving Iowa Family
Seven people in two cars died or were fatally injured during a Sunday outing crash on U S 61 in Grant County. The Fondell family from Dubuque and Vincent Penne kamp of Lancaster were among the dead or injured, with several children hospitalized and two dying later in Dubuque. TheWisconsin weekend toll rose to 15, contributing to a yearly 628 traffic deaths.

Plane Club Plans Model Demonstrations at Monroe Airport
The second annual moge airplane demonstration by the Freeport model Airplane Club will be held Sunday, Sept. 4 starting at 1 p.m. at Monroe Municipal Airport. The event features radio control and free flight planes. All interested may participate and the public is invited. If rain, the event moves to Sunday, Sept. 11 at the same time.

Firemen Suffer Burns in Blaze at Lena Plant
Three Lena firefighters were burned and two hospitalized after a fire at the Kibbte Corn Cob Processing Division in Waddams Grove. Chief Eugene Roe and firefighters Bob Herman and Paul Trappen were near a storage door as 40-foot flames erupted at 4:45 p.m. Roe and Herman were sent to Freeport Memorial Hospital. Trappen received medical care locally. Fire crews had fought the blaze since 1 a.m. and had been cooling a three-porthole top section when flaming debris erupted. The bin contained about three railroad carloads of corn cob powder used in livestock feed and chemicals. The cause remains undetermined. Tankers from Warren, Winslow, and Pearl City aided the response.

Brooklyn volunteers fought two barn blazes three miles southwest of town over the weekend. Delbert Staley’s barn burned hay with no livestock lost. Equipment is Salvaged Quick Action Saves Cattle in Area Blaze
A barn fire on Roger Patterson farm Route 3 Monroe Saturday night destroyed the barn and losses included 7,000 bales of hay and straw 1,500 bushels of oats and farm equipment. Firemen from Monroe and Browntown fought the blaze after a 9 15 p m alarm but could not halt the fire. Patterson and a hired man were unloading straw when smoke was spotted. Cattle were driven from the barn and milk house items removed as flames spread. The Patterson operation has moved to nearby barns on other properties. insurance coverage is undetermined.

Two Ward brothers injured in County Trunk K crash
Bruce Ward 15 remained in Memorial Hospital with severe head lacerations though listed as doing fine after a Saturday traffic accident in which his brother Stephen 18 was treated for lacerations and released. They are sons of Mr and Mrs Robert Ward Route 3 Darlington. Stephen drove a car that ran out of control on a curve three miles south of Darlington and overturned.
