Handgun bill advances to uncertain House fate

The Senate approved a ban on easily concealable handguns by 68 to 25 and sent the measure to the House with uncertain prospects. Supporters led by Sen. Birch Bayh say the law would remove crimedest weapons from the market, while many handguns already owned would remain legal. The bill adds federal crimes for crimes against law enforcement and enhances penalties for firearm felonies, but stops short of bans on private ownership or universal registration.
