A sprawling downtown apartment block in Kenosha was leveled by a series of explosions and a major fire. At least 13 residents and five firefighters were injured as natural gas leaks prompted evacuations before the danger subsided.
The House backed President Johnson's anti poverty measure 228 to 190 in a preliminary roll call but delayed final passage until today to print the bill and amendments. A bid to strike the enacting clause failed 225 to 198 after GOP and Southern Democrats briefly disrupted the session. The measure mirrors the Senate version with one loyalty oath amendment approved 144-112.
Police found Cynthia Ann Hartman 4, Joseph 5, and Martin Hartman 6 suffocated inside an unused refrigerator on the back porch of their apartment building in Chicago. Their mother had reported them missing hours earlier.

Survived by parents Frederick and Gertrude Van Voast and siblings Mary Ellen and Jack. grandmother Mrs. Minnie Figi Monroe. Services set for Monday Hawaiian time. grandmother plans to attend by plane.
A search for a plane reported in trouble over northern Wisconsin was suspended Friday night after the craft was found at Crivitz airport. Forest County sheriff's office confirmed the locate and called off the search.
Two local groups, Knights of Columbus Norton and Green County Shriners Hawthorne, prepare to paint the Bandshell at Twining Park while the City Band performs Monday night at 7 30. Officials name captains and a judge, with the transport funded for hospital residents and a full program listed including Swiss and Dixieland performances.
Lida Sue Kadlec of Hayward was crowned Friday night queen of the 1964 Midwest Shrine football game. The 16 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Kadlec recently completed treatment at a Shrine hospital. She received her crown at a garden party and coronation ball hosted by Tripoli Shrine and will reign over the NFL exhibition at County Stadium on August 22 between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.
Mrs. John F. Fitzgerald, grandmother of the late President, died at age 98 in Boston. Born Josephine Mary Hannon in Acton, she married the future Boston mayor in 1889 and raised six children including Mary, the President's mother. She witnessed major events in Kennedy era on television.

Andrew Pixley 21 appeared in Justice Court in Jackson charged with first degree murder for the strangling of Debby 12 and Cindy 8 McAuliffe in a Jackson hotel room while their mother and sister slept nearby. The father Circuit Court Judge Robert McAuliffe seized Pixley until police arrived. The McAuliffe family was on a five week trip. Pixley had Army service prior.
