The Associated Press reports a deadly Friday on Wisconsin streets and highways. Eighteen fatalities include several teens and a family of Milwaukee. several crashes were single-vehicle and others involved cars and tractors.
Green County Extension Office announced the Wisconsin State Fair entries for home economics August 13 to 22 in Milwaukee. James C. Cross Jr., 22, a UT sophomore, was charged with murder in the July 18 slayings of Susan Rigsby and Shirley Ann Stark. The bodies of the Dallas women were found July 30 in a weed field near Austin. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty. Cross was jailed without bond after signing a statement. authorities say the investigation remains focused on him.
In West Point Mississippi 18 year old Mike Reuss son of Wisconsin congressman Rep Henry S Reuss denies shoving State Trooper B Cowart during arrests of 45 civil rights demonstrators. Reuss a Stanford student and volunteer worker says he learned of Cowarts death in jail. The incident followed protests against the Beasley school disruption and a crowded front to a voter registration bill debate.
Max R. Harms 42 an auto motive mechanic living in Monroe for five years died of a sudden heart attack at 8 30 this morning at Windy Acres Golf Course five miles southwest of Monroe He was born April 13 1923 in Longwood Wisconsin and survived by his wife Shirley Mead Harms three sons a daughter his parents two brothers and two sisters The coroner said no inquest and death was natural. Arrangements are pending at Newcomer Funeral home Monroe.
Washington based Cornell University entomologist James E. Lloyd reports fireflies of genus Photuris mimic Photinus signals to lure and devour Photinus males. He tested by flashing Photinus calls in Florida Illinois and Virginia and observed Photuris females sending invitations followed by predation.
Hobson N. Darling 76 retired United Telephone Co. employee died at his Monroe home of a heart attack. He lived at 1118 19th Ave. and was a lifelong Monroe resident born Oct. 26, 1888. Survived by wife Edna Odell, sister Ruth Beach, and nephew Kenneth Mayer. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday at St Nessy Funeral Home with Rev. C James Weis officiating. burial Greenwood Cemetery.
A Chicago and North Western Railway diesel engine derailed last night at the N Rock City Road crossing in Ridott Illinois. The derailment is believed due to a broken rail. The four cars stayed on the tracks. a track was used to move the freight cars and caboose away. Crews were sent to repair the rail and clear the crossing. the train had originated in Freeport and was bound for Chicago.
Monroe's Civil Defense Auxiliary Police announces a countywide recruitment drive for volunteers to join the unit. Prospective members face a one year probation learning first aid traffic control and nuclear fallout procedures. The drive aims to expand before Cheese Days.
In Land O Lakes Florida Sister Mary of Juliana 70, a nun of the Order of the Good Shepherd, reunited with her brother Charles J Johannsen for the first time since 1916. They were born in Chicago where she raised him and led him through life. Sister Mary now supervises the Good Shepherd School for Girls in Arizona and plans a three day visit with the Johannsens before returning to her cloister duties.
Carl Nelson 74 a retired Castle Rock farmer and father of Robert Nelson Blanchardville died yesterday in a Dodgeville hospital after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Castle Rock Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife Mable three other sons Galin Bosco bel Stanley Madison and Carl Jr Cobb two sisters Mrs Harold Kennedy Boscobel and Mrs Alma Dromboski Deerfield four brothers Arthur Viroqua Enos Fennimore Lawrence Cobb and Neal Mr Sterling 23 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
A Beechcraft C45H twin engine plane crashed into All Souls Cemetery near Lakewood California killing eight aboard two families. Victims include James Witmarsh 37 pilot and wife Mildred plus children Terry 16 Mary Margaret 14 and James Edward Dent 37 wife Rebecca 15 Peggy 15 and Richard 16. Plane registered to James C Thomas III Pasadena. Debris started grass fire as neighbors watched in shock.
MT HOREB Special Joe Koenig, Perry farmer, lost 40 cows when lightning struck a wooded field Thursday night. The herd of 41 cows were grazing together and the lone survivor survived the bolt.
