Two Die as Tornado Strikes Lake Mendota Shore
Early today a tornado killed two people and injured four as it ripped through cottages by Lake Mendota near Madison Wisconsin. Victims were Miss Ann Worringer 58 of Waunakee and Miss Edna Clough 54 of Albuquerque New Mexico. The storm passed within 200 yards of Camp Indianola where 180 boys were staying but caused no injuries there. Police and hospital reports noted several injuries and the lake recovery of the two bodies occurred after daylight. The Weather Bureau noted the surprise nature of the event in the middle of the night.

Firemen were summoned to Crandall Oil Co. last night around 6 20 to battle a blaze in a fire buffing machine. The machine was ruined by the fire and the cause remains unknown. Firemen aired out the building afterward. Last troops leave Detroit after federal force withdraws ending racial violence.

Zwingli Church Monticello to Dedicate New Education Building
Zwingli Church United Church of Christ in Monticello marks its 6th anniversary with the dedication of a new Christian Education building after the 9:15 morning service. Dr. Ralph P. Ley will speak at the morning service and Rev. A R Achtemeier will address the 2:00 pm anniversary service. Construction began March 27 1966 and cost about 185000 dollars. Thunder and lightning rattled Monroe at 4 a.m. as about three quarters of an inch of rain fell and many windows were closed. No fire alarm sounded despite the storm, while dawn brought sun and wet fields for Maxwell Street Days. Power and Light reported lightning trouble on switches and fuses, with transformers hit. United Telephone said repair work was underway.

Youth Injured Seriously in Fall at Mt Horeb Farm
John Darrell Judd age 16 17 in October son of Darrell and Mrs Judd Route 1 Mr Horeb suffered serious injuries from a six foot fall while helping his father load for combining operations. He injured both wrists fractured right elbow possible left elbow fracture as further X rays were planned. He will be a senior at Mt Horeb High School.

Aldermen Back Federal Urban Renewal Plan in Monroe
The Monroe City Council approved a $647,595 federal grant application to renew the west side business area damaged by the 1965 tornado. It authorized underground tanks for a new service station at 9th Street and 16th Avenue and moved forward after Planning Commission approval. Wesley L. Dodge, 8th Ward alderman, opposed financing, calling the project socialist.

Monroe Youth Council seeks officers for junior and senior high
Monroe Parks and Recreation director Ron Barribeau announced applications open August 3 for Monroe Youth Council membership for junior and senior high students. Members gain Youth Center access from Sept 1, 1967 to Aug 31, 1968 and plan activities such as dances, pool play, tournaments, and table tennis. Two separate councils, one per school level, will form with officers chosen by members and Barribeau as advisor. Committees include snack bar, clean-up, door, entertainment, decorations, publicity, and office staff.

Mrs Seaton’s Tour Cut Short in Denmark
