City Council approves two parcels to expand North Side parking

The council unanimously authorized spending 26450 to buy two parcels near the North Side lot. The Elmer property at 817 17th Avenue costs 15950 and the Jenny lot fronts 8th street for 10500. The plan adds 45 to 50 stalls and may require access reconfiguration.

Illinois raises women’s drinking age to twenty one

Gov Otto Kerner signed legislation boosting the legal drinking age for women from 18 to 21 and it took effect immediately. The prior law set 21 for men, while an effort to extend 19 for both sexes failed in the Illinois House.

Guard and Reserve Air Force Alert 71 Units Across States

The Air Force alerted 28 000 personnel in 71 Air National Guard and Air Reserve units for possible active duty as part of the defense buildup for Berlin. Kennedy authorized up to 250 000 reservists to be called and duty tours extended, with about 750 aircraft involved including around 100 transports. The Wisconsin 128th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron based at Gen. Billy Mitchell Field in Milwaukee, with 200 personnel, was among those alerted.

Seven NASA astronauts started a two day series of routine physicals at Lackland Air Force Base hospital in San Antonio. Dr. William O. Douglas of Langley AFB Virginia pronounced them in excellent condition as the tests began. Douglas will undergo the same checkup to evaluate results.

William Penn 54 Dies in Pittsburgh Alcoa executive

William Penn 54 an Alcoa executive died at 1 15 a m today in his Pittsburgh home after a several month illness. Republicans' withholding contest splits Wisconsin Assembly vote

In Madison the Assembly split on withholding in the GOP tax revision bill with 53 voting to accept the amendment and 46 against rejecting it. The clash followed a two hour caucus and a shouting match between Frank Nikolay and Speaker David Blanchard. Democrats vow to oppose the new withholding measure while GOP leaders rally behind a plan to forgive 1961 state income taxes for earnings of 10 000 or less.
