Insurance Expert Hits Steel Wages
Murray Latimer testifies for the CIO steelworkers before a presidential fact finding board that current sick benefit plans for steelworkers are inadequate. He notes weekly gaps of 40 to 45 dollars, urging cash sick leave and accident benefits of 31.50 weekly, hospitalization for workers and families, and up to 200 dollars for surgical costs. Latimer cites December 1948 BLS data showing a four person family needs 59 to 62 dollars weekly in steel towns for a low but adequate living standard, while industry mutual plans pay 11.50 to 37.50 weekly with an average under 20. He also notes that Want Ads are big producers.
