Civil Defense Seeks Conelrad Reception Data

Monroe Civil Defense Director Walter Drews asks area residents to report Conelrad reception after the national Civil Defense alert. The 1 PM CDT exercise includes NAWAS warning from Colorado Springs and a 640/1240 kHz Conelrad broadcast with other stations silenced. Officials will finalize local county participation at a courthouse meeting tomorrow at 2 PM.

Planes Hunt Pacific For Flier Gluckmann

Coast Guard planes searched the waters and islands of the Pacific for long overdue Peter Gluckmann a San Francisco watchmaker who vanished in radio silence three days ago while attempting a non stop light plane record from Tokyo to New York. A Bandera Texas housewife reported hearing what she thought was a short wave radio message that he was setting down on an island 150 miles from Honolulu.

Canadians Die In B 25 Bomber Crash In Milwaukee Harbor

Six Canadian Air Force men aboard a B 25 bomber died after attempting an emergency landing near Milwaukee Gen. Billy Mitchell Field. Coast Guard boats and Army helicopters joined an all night search for survivors as wreckage and clothing were found off Lake Michigan. The crew included Air Commodore J G Stephenson and Wing Cmdr George W Kuster.

A planned strike in Chicago set for 6 p.m. Monday has been postponed indefinitely by the Brotherhood following action by the National Mediation Board. The move leaves workers and management in suspense as talks continue.

Homestead Tax Relief Plan Ruled Unconstitutional

Wisconsin Attorney General John Reynolds said a proposed homestead exemption plan would violate the constitutional tax uniformity rule. The plan would cost about 30 million dollars by allowing a 2000-dollar assessment level on owner occupied dwellings. The tax panel also rejected a general sales tax proposal 10 to 7, leaving only a progress report for the Legislature's May 16 reconvening.

Donors Sought for Blood Drive in Monroe and Brodhead

Rev. Gerritt Mouw, county Red Cross chairman, says 106 area residents pledged to donate at the Monroe unit, with 50 more needed. The Monroe drive runs 1 to 6 p.m. Monday at the junior high gym. Brodhead follows 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Monroe aims 127 pints but requires at least 150 donors. Rural towns Monroe, Washington, Jordan, Sylvester, Clarno and Cadiz have few volunteers. Donors with jaundice or hepatitis histories are ineligible, reducing potential contributions.

Monroe Places Third in Relays at Mineral Point Meet

Monroe High School finished third with 45 points at the Mineral Point Relay Meet. Platteville won with 53 points and Mineral Point had 48. Monroe claimed wins in the broad jump and shuttle relay and earned medals in high jump, pole vault, the 1 364 yard relay and the 780 yard relay.

Henry M. Dooly of Monticello Dies at 73

Henry M. Dooly, 73, of Monticello, died at St. Clare hospital after a long illness. Born Sept. 15, 1886 in Green County, he married Mary Kubly in 1908 and farmed locally until her death in 1921. Surviving relatives include two nieces and two nephews. services are pending at the ae funeral home in Monticello.

Course in First Aid Slated for Monticello

Three Killed In B47 Crash Near Topeka

A B47 reconnaissance plane from Forbes Air Force Base crashed 12 miles southeast of Topeka Kansas killing co pilot Lt Carl Stanlee Heaberlin 24 born three hours after his son was born. Also killed were Capt Paul Jones 34 aircraft commander and 1st Lt Granville Harkreader 23 navigator. Jones widow Lorna and two children survive. Wreckage burned for hours as air force investigators opened the crash site. Capt Jones married to Lorna Buckingham of Blanchardville.

New Guidance Aide Named for Monroe High School

The Monroe high school guidance program gains Leo Sebald for 1960 61 to complete his master’s work at the University of Wisconsin He succeeds James Speerschneider who departs for Madison Sebald is a native of Qostburg where his father is a cheesemaker and he taught two years at Pulaski before military service.
