Crowds greet General MacArthur in Chicago welcome day

Thousands line Chicago streets as General MacArthur, wife Jean, and son Arthur arrive at Midway Airport aboard the Bataan. He is greeted by Mayor Kennelly amid a 17 gun salute and a review of the 174th military police battalion. The motorcade heads to the loop, followed by a Soldier Field jamboree tonight.

485 Graded Students Will Visit Milwaukee

The largest charter bus group from Monroe is set to depart at 7 a m with at least a dozen large buses carrying 485 rural and state grade school pupils from Green county plus teachers and some parents on an annual outing in Milwaukee on MacArthur day. Bus depots report increased demand and drivers from Chicago are being recruited to meet reservations.

General MacArthur's Chicago visit brings cool foggy forenoon weather and tonight's Soldier Field welcome with clear skies and 42 degrees. 1,500 chrysanthemums rain from hotel windows as Mrs MacArthur arrives, a diamond brooch copy of the five star insignia by her side. Michigan City guests spread an arrowed greeting toward Chicago on the beach, while Kirkland High School sends its student body to Chicago for MacArthur events.

Mattress Fire At Arnold L Love Home

Firefighters responded at 2 28 p m to 1522 17th avenue to extinguish a blazing mattress. The blaze started from a burning cigarette and caused smoke damage to a second floor room. The mattress was destroyed as water from booster and Indian pumps was used. Fire crews left by 2 45 p m.

William Moon Named To MacArthur Honor Guard

William S. Moon an MP at Ft. Sheridan Illinois was selected from 600 candidates to serve in the honor guard for General MacArthur when he arrives at Chicago and departs for Milwaukee. Moon is the son of Mrs. Charles Thrasher of 2400 14th Avenue.

Milwaukee Prepares General MacArthur Homecoming

Final plans for General MacArthur’s Milwaukee homecoming are set as the city expects a large crowd. Governors and escorts greet him at the border, with stops in Great Lakes, Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee before a 15.8 mile city tour and a flight to New York aboard the Bataan.

John Divan Sweeney aged 84 died yesterday at his daughter Mrs. Harvey White’s home in Fayette after a three week illness. Born in Cadiz township he married Jane Knewstubb in Lamont. Assembly Seeks Ruling On Tightened Gambling Laws

The assembly agreed to ask the attorney general to rule on the legality of a proposed law tightening liquor and gambling enforcement. Adoption of the ruling resolution delays consideration of the senate bill until next week. The measure would allow search warrants for raids in neighboring counties to prevent tip-offs. The assembly also backs a study of education needs and fiscal relations for state colleges and UW.

Ground Broken At East School

Ground was broken today at the site of a new East school addition signaling the start of the long planned building program. The project includes an addition for South school and repairs to both buildings funded by a $300,000 bond issue. Excavation by Alice Holtshopple firm under subcontract to L S Wagner and Son Co, successful bidder. Five large trees dating to presettlement days removed.

Wisconsin Mother of Year Mrs Woods O Dreyfus Named

Mrs Woods O Dreyfus of Milwaukee named Wisconsin mother of the year for 1951 at the Wisconsin Congress of Parents and Teachers convention. The 57 year old grandmother serves on the Milwaukee school board and the Milwaukee County Red Cross board and is a former matron of Eastern Star Milwaukee Chapter No 2. She has three sons and four grandchildren. New officers elected include Mrs Joseph Born of Sheboygan president and Mrs R J Normington of Waukesha vice president along with Leslie Johnson of Superior and Mrs P J Kummerlein of Milwaukee as officers for two year terms.

President Truman said he will not gag General MacArthur and will let him speak freely. He noted five star rank legislation could give him control but he has no plan to use such power. Truman also said Korea's fate depends on Russia and praised Secretary Acheson.

Key West Collision Kills 43 As Divers Recover Bodies

Grim navy divers recovered wreckage and bodies from a Cuban airliner and a navy Beechcraft after a mid-air collision near Key West. By 11 a.m. 24 bodies were raised. divers worked in relays to search the 20 foot deep sand beds while a naval board investigates the crash. The four engined transport carried 34 passengers and five crew from Miami to Havana. the Beechcraft carried four. The crash occurred in clear weather near President Truman’s little white house. President seeks tighter controls farm price limits

President Truman asked Congress for higher taxes and tighter credit controls to curb inflation. He urged fair ceilings on farm and other prices and proposed extending the defense production act for one year while outlining parity-based farm pricing and a farm price freeze aimed at limiting gains to about five percent.

Miko F Swanton executive secretary of the Wisconsin Council of Agriculture will address the Green County Breeders Association cooperative at the courthouse tomorrow night. April 30 Deadline Set For Food Dispensers

Taverns restaurants and any place selling food or beverages must file an operating statement by April 30 with the Milwaukee OPS office. The report should show gross sales based on the previous fiscal year or calendar year 1949 or the months of either period. Ceiling prices are set by the operator from the ratio of raw food costs to gross sales in the report.

United States proposes bombing enemy bases in Manchuria if communists strike heavy air attacks on UN forces in Korea. A U S spokesman said the plan was outlined to 13 other nations with forces in Korea and drew no objections.
